Combat Wombat Black

Just for a bit of clarification, can anyone tell me whether the frame & air box on a CW were painted glossy or satin originally?

Getting ready to pull the motor and strip the frame bare. Wanted to be as accurate as possible.

Never asked for my 03 Wombat and did it with a satin black. So just curious if folks know which finish is more appropriate? If it’s glossy, I may add a clear coat just to make it a little tougher as well! :ugeek: Victor

My CW is satin black. It's all original so I'm sure that is the factory paint.

Are you sure you want to strip and re-paint? Antique furniture with the original finish is worth a lot more than the same piece that has been restored. The same thing applies to motorcycles.

It's your bike. If you decide to strip and re-paint please don't touch the air cleaner cover.

Thanks! I’ll continue with a Satin Black then! The frame does have some rust from being stored in the higher humidity area in Texas where it was. So I need to sand & repaint it to stop the rusting. Also the air box back is extremely faded, even compared with the frame and I have to do some welding on it. So that means paint as well.

As for the air cleaner cover, it’s an original CW cover, but not original to this bike. It has some rust, which I will clean with Naval Jelly, but I will then just clear coat it and leave the original “Combat Scars” to let some of her history show through. Thanks again for your input! :ugeek: Victor
