reed valve

so ive been doing a lot of reading and this project came with a reed valve. just had the cylinder bored out and it came back with a new piston, but if i understand, with out, let say, modifying the piston there is no benefit to having the reed valve the old piston had holes drilled in it ,would the new one need them also to get the benefits ? thanks ...albert

You do need the correct piston to match the reed intake.

You will need boost ports machined, ground or cut into the cylinder AND "holes" in the piston to take advantage of the reed valve.

An old Hodaka How-To-Di-It called 'Reed Carefully' used to be available at the Strictly Hodaka website.

I looked for it at Hodaka-Parts.com site, but could not find it.

Perhaps someone on this forum can find it and provide it or a link.

i have the "reed Carefully" article ill take another look . yea im to far into this thing to stop now, ive been telling my grandson it can be his when its done and hes helping at every stage, soooo i cant stop now or he would disown me. still needs a lot of attention ...thanks albert

You don't HAVE to use the reed.

From what I see you have a stock Ace cylinder & piston.

You could clean up the reed manifold & use it without the reed. No boost ports? Leave the reed out.

Or you could use a stock Ace manifold IF you have the Mikuni 20mm carb to fit.

If you just want to get it running that's what I'd do.

The reed manifold you have allows you to use a new Mikuni VM22 if you don't have a "good" carb.

I have used the VM22 on my Ace in the past.

Reasonably priced, easy to find. I found the stock jetting was okay for starters.

Ace standard air cleaner won't fit it, but you may not have that or care anyway.

thanks AL, you have a good suggestion, i will not use the reed valve and getting one of those VM22 carbs would be a lot cheaper, and going that way will buy some time to fix the carb i have. and it came with out a air cleaner so thats easy enough . in the end its about getting it running. as time goes buy im sure it will tinkered with the grandson is ten as he grows it will have to keep up...albert
