Ace Sprocket Carrier, Accessory?

Hello All, things seem rather quiet on the forum as of late so I figured I’d chim in with a query.
I was hoping to get some info on the above mentioned optional part for Ace 90’s and I suspect 100’s as well (M92 at least.) Accoring to the advent, I found during a random google photo search, shows a “Hodaka Sprocket Carrier, “ part# SL 100, that carries the overlay sprocket when not needed. Because of the price I suspect it’s a bolt on adapter versus a whole new hub.
I’ve always liked how Honda did that on some of their small bikes and step-thru models and was surprised when I saw Hodaka had an offering as well.
Anyone have any info or pics?
Thanks.

I may have a wheel with a carrier on it, looks familiar. I'll check and get back with some pics if I do.

Thanks Thrownchain. I figured someone might have an example in their collection.
Here’s two screen shots/ photos. I’d found it awhile ago in an eBay add, if I recall correctly, the seller had said that they were Hodaka but who knows. Looks like I may have deleted the pertinent photo, unfortunately, they don’t show the carrier or how it mounts to the hub in the photos I’d saved

My B+ has one on the rear wheel & it’s complete. I’ll get a pic or 2 tomorrow!

Anyone find one in their parts collection? I'd really like to see some photos as to what the adapter looks like and how it mounts.
The kids and I are getting to the point in our project where we're discussing where to put the overlay sprocket when not in use. So I figured I'd check.
Thanks,
Bev

Man I would love to have at least a couple of those. My B+ could use it's street sprocket for the road ride, and then an easy swap to the trail sprocket for the bad rock.
If someone has one and can post up some good close up pics, with measurements, maybe it could be replicated?

It may be just the pic, but spin the rear wheel and see if the sprocket wobbles side to side.

With the overlay sprocket set-up, is there a concern for the chain alignment resulting in uneven chain/sprocket wear and potential breakage, or are the induced angles on the chain run negligible?

Thrown, I think it's the pic. I had to hold a shop light while my daughter took the photos. The sprocket does spin straight, both the over lay and the stock sprocket and the chain doesn't bind or sway. However, we did have to straighten the stock sprocket when we rebuilt the bike. It was a long night with my arbor press, 2 beer in length.... if I recall correctly
.
Matt, I'm not too sure I'm understanding you. The carrier just allows you to store the over lay sprocket. Once the over lay is unbolted you take the same bolts that hold it to the stock sprocket and bolt it onto the carrier. That said you don't have to remove the rear wheel to swap them back and forth, just do the aforementioned and remove the extended length of chain. So you can ride the bike to the trail, swap on the overlay sprocket, install the extended length of chain (adjust it, of course) and be off to terrorize the hills with your "Mean- Hund-Red CC Mo-Cheen" or at least that's my plan.

That’s an interesting dual sprocket assembly. One question. How do you compensate for the chain alignment? With mine, there is no compensation.

Thanks for the clarification. I was thinking you just moved the chain from one sprocket to the next which would change the angle between the countershaft and drive sprocket. Based on what I believe to be the case, the chain aligns from the countershaft to the outer (highway cruise) sprocket and when changing to the dirt sprocket, the dirt sprocket is moved outboard. Am I close? Final question - how is the increased slack in the chain compensated for when changing from dirt to street or, conversely, where does the extra chain length come from when changing from street to dirt? This information will be valuable to me as I have the concentric sprocket arrangement on my B+. My B+ in an around-town buzzer only so I never needed to change sprockets. Thank you!

the idea was you ride your bike from your house to where your going to trail ride. you will use the 36 tooth sprocket to get you there and then before you hit the trail you take the chain off loosen the rear wheel put the 50 tooth over lay sprocket on the 36 tooth sprocket and bolt it on then with the provided 6 extra links and 2 master links adjust the chain and away you go when its time to go home you reverse the process the idea of the carrier was you need not take the rear wheel off ..thats what i read somewhere anyway...albert

Thanks Albert. That makes perfect sense. I just realized (?) that the ad you posted was for add-on accessories for the Ace 90. Duh. My Ace 100B+ came stock with the overlay sprocket. Its probably a similar system - perhaps improved. I will go to the corner now and suck my thumb.

No need to sick your thumb Matt, but I’m still curious. Do you move the bigger sprocket to the location of the smaller? Or how else do you align the back sprocket with the chain?
Is the carrier just a holding place & you bolt the 50 to the 36 the same way it’s on my bike, pictured?

Hi Victor. My understanding is that the big sprocket is moved outboard to overlay the small sprocket when one wants to change from street gearing. That keeps the chain run consistent. I intend to take a closer look at mine to see how the whole system works. Any other way it seems would induce an angle into the chain run from countershaft to drive sprockets. It appears to be generally the same way the rear sprocket derailleur works on a bicycle with the smallest sprocket on the most outboard side of the gear stack.

OK Cool! Just had me wondering. Do it’s a pull the wheel situation each time! Thx!

Victor, nope, no wheel removal necessary.
