Quick question!

OK. So I removed the clutch cover because I thought it was leaking because of a possible ripped gasket.
However it was leaking at the oil pump cover. Even though I had been running premix, it seems the pump was turning and somehow bringing tranny oil into the space with the oil pump!
So I removed the pump, and there was only one screw holding it in place.
It’s my understanding that the pump doesn’t pull oil from the tranny but rather from the 2 stroke oil tank, which is removed and the oil intake is capped off on the intake manifold.
So, how was oil getting into the pump housing, &, can I leave it like this and just put the cover back on, or do I need to do something else? This is the first oil pump motor I’ve worked on & I assumed I could safely leave the pump in place & go premix,

Make a cover to seal where the pump was. Oil is most likely seeping around the pump drive shaft.

I was hoping someone with direct experience would enter some information. Since I haven't removed an oil pump and continued operation with pre-mix on a Road Toad, I simply don't have direct experience. However, it sure seems like I've heard of folks installing a small plate and gasket over the drive "port" shown in the photo, and that makes sense to me. In stock condition there is a gasket there, gotta be a reason for that.

PS: I do have a hypothesis on how your loose pump might have been able to pump out transmission oil, but it would take longer to type it out than it might be worth.

OK. So I’m open to suggestions on how to make the cover suggested. Or if I reinstall the pump, with it tightly fastened, would that also stop the leaking? Thanks!

Block off plate and gasket required when removing the oil pump. Both oil pump mounting bolts would also be required to keep gearbox oil in its place.
You can make the plate and gasket or buy it.

Thanks Dale! That was a quick & easy order & I added a 3 pack of clutch cover gaskets too!

OK so yesterday I worked on obtaining new 5mm screws to hold the oil pump on. If anyone needs to know, the short one is 20mm long and the longer one is 30mm long. The gasket was still in good shape so I figure the leak came because one bolt fell out and the other was loose!
Once I got it bolted back in place, I took her for a 2 mile ride (2 laps around my subdivision!). Opened the oil pump housing cover and NO MORE LEAK!!! Yeay! The new counter shaft seal and sprocket coupler are also working just great! No more leaks there either.
I ran it the two miles and opened the case to check it. Then I closed it back up and let it sit over some bare concrete for a few hours. No drips, certainly no watching the oil run out like with the first seal! Also did a realignment of the rear wheel as the left side of the tire was rubbing a bit on the chain guard. So that's all done. She sat over night and not a new drop of oil out of her. So it think this leak is history!
Arrangements are under way to get the VIN inspection done and getting it licensed for the street, now that everything works! Heck, I even rewired the neutral indicator as the wiring was gone for that, and now it's working as well!
Onward to the Green Toad to finish it!!!
