30mm fork mods

I just finished a 30mm fork modification as described in the technical tips section. I plugged the original oil passage and drilled three new ones above the metal clip, installed a longer spring and modified the damper rod. What I am unclear about is what to do with the plastic spacer. The instructions don't mention what to do with this part.Do I leave it in? Does it serve an important function? (It seems that it will block the three new passages) Or do I discard it?
Thanks
Tom

This may require some input from Hodaka Dave.
. . . as I recall, the modification sheet was for forks which had a long steel bushing (which was to be shortened) but no plastic bushing (spacer, as you called it). The original lengths of those items and their modified lengths are important. And I can't answer your question(s) . . . except to say . . .
The bushings are supposed to cover those three new holes sequentially as the forks near full extension to provide a simplified means of progressive damping.
