stator covers.

Post by cuzncletus »

Just curious. Gathering up parts for my "back from the dead (leaves)" project '73 Wombat trials bike, rescued from a raked up pile of leaves and brush in a backyard. The bike has an Ace 100 stator cover so I'm guessing many parts are interchangeable between the Ace and Wombat. What I'm not seeing are stator covers proper for a Wombat. Plenty of clutch covers, a few stator covers for Aces and others, but no Wombats and no where near the total number for sale as clutch covers. Obviously these were victims of the dirt bike wars of almost a half century ago, but why the stator cover more so than the clutch cover? Inquiring minds want to know.

The stator cover is also the shifter cover. The shifter shaft hole wears out. All repairable but many were discarded or hopefully put on the shelf for repair. The stator side is also the chain side which sometime damages the case beyond reasonable repair if not maintained. Clutch covers never seem to wear out or be in much danger hence the abundance of them. :?

The Ace100 cover would reverse the shift pattern. 1 up and 4 down. Since this was a trials bike, is it possible that it was used on purpose? Are the footpegs modified to sit further back. If so, they could reverse the shift lever and point it backwards giving them a 1 down and 4 up shift pattern.

This isn't a trials bike yet. Right now it's an old throw away. A couple of hundred hours matched by a couple of thousand dollars from now it might be a trials bike. Interesting info about the reversed shift pattern. That's why you join sites like this.
