I've been working on fixing up my '74 Super Combat and ran across this brochure from Pabatco. Apparently, these accessory kits were available back in the day, but are they still available? I checked SH but didn't see them.

Hello Jack, those kits are out there, but it will take a little searching. Mostly they can be found in collectors of NOS stuff in private collections, If I may suggest just put out request here for one, I
bought one several years ago for a Dirt Squart, I since have sold., might also suggest checking with Hodaka-parts INc as well in Missouri, new parts dealer. Bruce

We picked up the lighting conversion kit for a Dirt Squirt last year at Mid Ohio. Was part of a group of parts. NOS, ya never know what you'll find where.

How difficult would it be to make your own lighting kit from readily available parts. Does anyone know exactly what would be required to duplicate the materials in the prefabbed kits. I'd like to light up a DS beyond the bicycle lights it currently runs.

Complete Ace wiring set up, lights, charging system, battery, and the required switches. My understanding anyway.

Thanks Dan. Do you recall if its the chrome, painted tank, or both that included the lighting coils already mounted to the stator plate?

I would say both, but may be wrong. Maybe someone else will chime in.

That's what I was most interested in Kelly. Would you just wire in a 6 volt regulator off the charging coil, run a single lead to head and tail lights, and ground to frame? I'm just looking for a simple set-up for a fun trail bike.

Don't you need the battery to absorb the extra power produced? Or run risk of frying bulbs?

Every Model except the 93 Rats, 95 CW, and the CDI equipped 97 and 98 had lighting coils under the flywheels. The 93 and 95 can be converted with an Ace for Rat and Wombat for CW ignition swap an some tinkering. Never tried to put lights on a 97 or 98.

The problem with direct wiring lights without a battery or voltage regulator is your headlight acts like a tachometer. At idle your in the dark, and the more RPMs the engine spins, the brighter the lights get. They will get very, very bright just as they burn out.

If you have a strong interest and some spare cash, Powerdynamo in Germany makes 12 volt CDI kits that will give you a complete ignition, lights and enough power to charge your cell phone. I have these on a couple of my Yamahas and they are a dream

That is a very sexy light rig, Gary. I'm more aligned with olddogs though. I'm hoping to hook up a DS for evening trailing or getting out into the field early. Just for a bit of visibility. Off-road only. I have a Road Toad 6V regulator in my stash. Hopefully, that will help save on replacement bulb expenditures. The rig you posted looks like a set-up for a serious enduro mount, Gary.

I have been running a direct wired light system with an after-market solid state 12V voltage regulator for years on a Combat Wombat engine with Wombat (94) lighting coils mounted to the stator. Burning out bulbs has been eliminated with the voltage regulator. I'm also running a Preston Petty Headlight/Number Plate unit . . . so bulbs are available from my local NAPA auto parts store. My favorite head light is a 100 watt aircraft landing light. No one has ever called that light "feeble". If I get caught out in the woods after dark, I can hold kindling in the center of the light beam to start a fire. OK, not really - but it does present the problem of melting ANY tape I've used to tape up the glass for MX racing!

Captain, my understanding of aircraft landing lights is that there is a beam concentrator immediately in front of the filament and the reflector is focused to produce a well-defined "cylinder" of light with next to no beam divergence. Could you comment on how much "peripheral" illumination this provides. Also, do you know if there are there ACLs available that will fit into a 100B bucket? That is the mounting set-up I plan to use. Sorry Matt, my curiosity was satisfied when I found a 100 watt light which would fit in the Preston Petty Headlight/Number plate. So I don't know about the internals of the light itself . . . and I've not done ANY research on bulbs which fit Hodaka headlight assemblies.
