1975 Dirt Squirt Gas Tank

Post by HawkDPO »

Hello guys, I'm new to the group..so thanks! My dad has, what he says is, a 1975 Dirt Squirt. It has a black plastic gas tank, not the original. He is the original owner, sold to a friend briefly for his kids to learn and bought it back from him almost 20 years ago. He said that he got rid of the original tank because it was ugly. When I search pics, I see some with chrome and some with red...can I assume the the red tank is the one he is referring to? If it is, are they terribly hard to find? He is planning on giving this bike to me to restore and hang on to...I'd like to get it looking nice and original. Any ideas as to where to start? I understand that there is a small leak coming from the case from a mediocre repair job. Seeing as that we would not return to him, I have heard of a good Hodaka guy in the Richmond, VA area and another in the Kernersber, NC area. Anybody know of a good Hodaka source in the mid-atlantic area? I am located outside Raleigh, NC. Other than the small leak, the bike runs next to perfectly and is very clean (other than the tank). Any pointers would be great as I am not terribly familiar with Hodaka's.

Hawke,

Strictly Hodaka, this site, sells repo Hodaka plastic tanks. You could search Ebay and the internet for a used steel red or chrome tank, but I think the plastic tank will give you the best service.

Does the bike have chrome fenders, or red plastic ones?

I have looked at the Strictly Hodaka page. Was the original tank Red Metal or red plastic? And I am not sure about the fenders...the bike is still at my Dad's house. What did the '75 originally have? Chrome or plastic? Still has original seat in great condition, as is the original air filter and decal...just the tank was changed, so, the fenders should be original.

There were actually two different models of the Dirt Squirt made. The model 96 (or 92C) came out in 1974 and had a chrome tank and stainless steel fenders. The later model 01 came out in late 1975-1976, and had a painted steel tank and red fenders. The later model also had a reed valve engine.

Here's a couple of photos for you. The Chrome tank is the earlier Model 96 Dirt Squirt. The red tank is the Model 01 Dirt Squirt which was also reed valves & a black frame. The Chrome tank 96 was not reed valves & had a red frame. Victor
