I am in the process of re-building a Combat Wombat engine that I acquired - in a box (that is why I don't know the answer to this question). I know on the older Hodaka transmissions, the countershaft gears would go on with the shoulder facing up (toward the countershaft sprocket once complete). In test fitting the transmission on the Combat Wombat, I find that if I stack the gears that way (shoulder up), the transmission seems to bind. Can anyone that has worked on these transmissions (both the Super Combat or newer Super Rat) tell me if there is another orientation for these gears? Thanks ...Dirty Rat

Just for fun did you try stacking them the other way?

Dirty, if you go to the Strictly Hodaka website and pull up the "shop by schematics" tab for the Combat Wombat, you will be able to check out an exploded parts diagram that should clarify the gear stacking configuration. Pay careful attention to the "FWD" (forward) orientation arrow on the diagram so you can keep it all straight. These schematics are always helpful. I would also highly recommend scoring a copy of the official Wombat Workshop Manual. I refer to mine frequently.

Dirty, I've got a super combat engine apart right now and if you mean the shoulder of the gears facing towards the left, (towards the sprocket), then that is correct. I'd like to rebuild mine too, but looks like it will be too pricey.

Couple of things. If it came in a box, confirm the number of teeth on each gear, The simple parts diagram will list the proper tooth count for each gear. Watch the tooth count on the kick starter gear. They come in different tooth counts. Confirm your shim locations. there are a number of shims that can effect trans operation. I also find that to properly check the transmission gear sincro, the left case has to be on and secured with a couple screws. if you spin the gears with the case open, it will bind as the stack of gears can deflect to the side.

Thanks to those that responded. I know the transmission has all the correct pieces (it is one of the new re-heat treated ones). I also have all the workshop manuals available, unfortunately, they didn't make one for the Super Combat, just the Combat...different transmission. I have tried turning the gears over and it doesn't bind any more, but I didn't want to experiment on a $600 transmission and have it wrong.

The same gear stacking instructions apply to the Super Combat as listed for the Combat Wombat.
