Wombat 94 ignition

I need a magneto exciting coil for a Wombat 94 and can't find one from my Usual.Suspects (SH, Hodaka-Parts and HodakaParts).
Any other sources for a _New_ part? (943009)

Hate to mention it, especially here, but if the normal suppliers don't have one, check ebay. Quite often the entire stator assembly will come up and then you can take the parts you need.

Just emailed them. And waiting for a callback from another supplier.
I've not run diagnostics yet, but the exciter is the only original old part left in the ign, and is suspect. I'll do a preemptive replacement.

New parts can fail, and old parts can work perfectly. Since it was working when you went for a ride, have you changed the sparkplug? It is a two stroke after all. Even good working bikes do sometimes foul plugs.

True, but of everything in the ignition system, the only original part is the exciter coil, and it is crusty enough to be suspect. And since the new replacement parts are becoming NLA this would be a good time to find one. I've not even run diagnostics on this. It could be a bad ignition switch or a sheared flywheel key, etc.

FWIW, I just heard from a reliable source that the same part was used on the
Pre-74 Kawasaki KE125.

That should expand the search somewhat.

If none are available, you can always re-new the old one with new wire and re-wind. Just make sure to get a coated wire of the same diameter as the original and re-wind with the same amount of winds as the original. Too few and not as much current is produced, too many and it could hit the rotor.

And rewinding the coil is an option. I'm looking into that and there are details that should be considered.

Stator winding isn't really difficult, but guys who do it usually build a winding jig first to get the winds tight and even. The other details are wire gauge and length. Stator wire is available on the internet.

I found a new magneto coil from a Hodaka shop. Time is money and money is time, so I decided to not DIY this. And the MTBF Clock has been ticking on that coil for 40.years, so now I have a 100% new system now.

On the points cam in the flywheel there are some minor rust pits pn the cam surface. I wonder if those could be an issue with causing extra point rubbing block wear? Barely feel them running my thumb over them, I could fill the pits in with epoxy and polish the cam smooth.

Pits cause wear, but smoothing them out recontours the cam surface and can impact function. As long as there are no sharp edges, I would put a dab of grease and let them be.
