Dirt Squirt motor serial number question

Over on the Marketplace tab on SH there was a posting by an individual hoping to find the DS he owned as a kid. I have 3 of them and 2 were originally purchased in Michigan where he is from. No matches unfortunately, but I did notice on one of them (production date 6/72, frame # 0065X), there was no engine number in the usual place. Does anyone know if certain engine production runs were not serialized or are there alternate locations where the serial number was embossed?

When I purchased New engines from PABATCO in the early years, they were not not stamped. As we could stamp the corresponding numbers on the engine that corresponded to out titles or bill of sales. ------Clarence

Thanks Clarence. That makes good sense. That explains why there is a difference in the appearance of the many of the serial numbers on my Hodies. Good to know Clarence. Thank you!

Best,

Matt

A new replacement engine would have happened very seldom. The quality of engine stamping was not a priority for Hodaka that is my opinion. I would rate Hodaka a 100 for a functioning motorcycle and a 32 for serial number appearance.
