Quick question: I'm digging into a '72 Model 94 Wombat. When removing the exhaust system, I encountered what appears to be a typical steel machine bushing in place of the appropriate brass gasket. I'm no metallurgist, but does this pose any danger of cracking the pipe or spigot due to the relative hardness of the steel or are there any heat dissipation issues which could effect performance? Thank you.

94 Exhaust gasket question
Re: 94 Exhaust gasket question
Matt,
Can you post a picture? Are you positive that you have a model 94 or could it be a 94A? The 94A has a screw on exhaust joint with a metal bushing that allows a slip fit pipe with springs to hold it tight. The 94 would have the flame thrower pipe that screws onto the cylinder and has the copper gasket under the nut and has no springs.

Re: 94 Exhaust gasket question
Hi Dale, As always, thanks so much for the reply. Indeed it is a 1972 model 94. I probably pooched the terminology which makes my question confusing. There is a threaded male exhaust outlet on the jug and the pipe has a threaded female nut which attaches the pipe to the exhaust outlet over what appears to be a standard steel machine bushing. I will attempt to post a picture tomorrow, but as for today, I have expended my bike wrenching time allowance and the shop is dark (happy wife, happy life ya know - I save up the after-hours action for race weekends). Thanks again, Dale. I'll get the picture up tomorrow.

Re: 94 Exhaust gasket question
The correct Hodaka part is a copper crush washer that is filled with a heatproof composite ("asbestos"). Serves as a sealing washer with some "crushability". I'd be inclined to go with this arrangement. $14.95 at SH, and I couldn't find a substitute.

On it. In fact, I'm going to check my other Model 94. Absence of that malleable washer might explain why the exhaust nut keeps coming loose. Thank you!
