Hi All,
I'm beginning to dig into a white tank Trail Whale I recently scored that is just shy of a basket (it runs/shifts). It will undergo a rider resto to mechanical spec ultimately. The current conundrum is the restoration of the exhaust system. Happily, the Skyway silencer is remarkably pristine. I have two questions. First, there are a few rust-throughs on the main exhaust pipe. How does one go about removing and subsequently replacing the heat shield, to weld on the pipe defects, without ruining it? Secondly, where the stinger inserts into the main pipe, there is a perforated end of the stinger that has broken off. I have retrieved the piece from the main pipe but it is severely weakened. How important is this to the overall function of the exhaust system? As always, thanks to all.

Re: 250SL exhaust questions
All you can do is grind through the spot welds . Then to re install I would recommend brass brazing back on since you don't have to get the metal as hot as welding , less chance of a melt down.

Re: 250SL exhaust questions
Thanks, Rich! Would you suggest brazing for the two holes that will require sheet metal patch work as well?

Matt,
Here is a link to a posting on Youtube that Kelly posted regarding an exhaust repair. He has a number of similar postings on Youtube.

Excellent, Dale. That video covered the whole shootin match soup-to-nuts. Bonus - the spark plug off the high tension coil will need replacing and next up was a vid covering that. Nice!! Those SoCal videos are a gold mine. Thank you!!!!
