About to split the RT cases...

Post by viclioce »

So, I'm ready to split the cases on the Road Toad. Anything in particular j should be looking at besides the seals, bearings and bushings? She's a Model 99. The oil pump is complete & clean. But I may still run it premix.

I'm wondering if the RT has some of the similar issues to inspect. I know the Ace & the Wombat have the kick shaft roller bearings and coupler. Does the Toad have anything like that to check? I understand it has a different kick start system so it's like the more modern bikes which can kick over in gear with the clutch engaged. So is there anything else there to inspect? Thanks! ; D Victor

There's a lot more bits in those cases, so take your time and make notes, or better yet, pictures to help you remember where everything goes. The kickstarter mechanism is more robust and the clutch pinion bushing is replaced with needle bearings so they are not the Achilles heel they were in the earlier models. Other than that proceed as usual.

Looking at the schematic, the 99 has either the same or similar kick start roller assembly as the others. If it has primary kick start I am not aware of it.

I recall discussion about not running premix in the oil injection bikes without making modifications to the bearing boss on the left main bearing (or is it both bearings?). Older models have an oil passage through the top of the boss to bring premix (and residual migrating oil :? ) to the bearing. The injection bikes have a different delivery system. There is bound to be prior discussion on this point somewhere on the forum.

You will split the cases with the motor laying on the right side lifting off the left. I use this homemade block to lay the motor on, otherwise two short 2x4s will work.

I believe it's just the 03 Wombat that need to modify to run mixed fuel.

The Model 99 Road Toad engine needs no modification to run pre-mix. Among the small bore Hodies, only the Model 03 125cc engine requires disassembly and drilling of a passage to provide for lubrication of the magneto side main bearing and seal in order to convert from oil injection to pre-mix. And all the Road Toads (99 and 02) have primary kick start systems.

So the primary kick start is the one that will start in any gear or is it the same as the Ace and Wombat Model 24? That's where I'm confused. ; D Victor

Hey Greg. The RT is already set up to run premix. There is no issue with this. Only on the Model 03 125 motor. There is a port for the oil injection on the Reed valve manifold. All you have to do is block this port with a bolt. ; D Victor

The primary kick start system allows starting the bike in any gear. Just pull in the clutch lever and kick start. All of the ACE models and Model 94/95 Wombat/Combat Wombat require finding neutral before you can kick start.

The old kick start system was called "FRUSTRATING" if you ever crashed and stalled during a motocross race. Nothing like hunting for neutral with a face full of dirt and guys flying past you.

Frustrating may be an adequate response, but I'd still like to know what the older style kick start is called, dined the newer is referred to as primary kick start. Would it be considered a "secondary kick start?"

I don't know that the original kick start has a name . . . other than kick start. Mayhaps traditional kick start, original kick start, neutral-only kick start, not primary kick start.
