Newbie here.
Got hold of a 77 Wombat 03 out of a barn that had been sitting for 30 years. It had been parked due to the pilot tangling with a post and came out 2nd. It has 700 miles on the odometer and Nitto tires. A bit of work was required with a bottle jack and a chain also burning out the squirrels deposits in the pipe. So as soon as the bike fired we're off to do a few quick laps around the back yard grinning from ear to ear. So while it stands there cooling, fresh fluids are draining from unseen orifices. Notice the poor idle quality probably due to old crank seals. Premix was used.
A few questions then,
So to change all the engine seals is it necessary to pull the engine out and split the cases.
I am told there isn't a factory manual for the 03 wombat, what would be an acceptable alternative.
Do I need to obtain any special tools.
Is there a guide to set up the oil injection.
What else am I missing.

Hi Custodian, welcome to the group. If you can post up a photo of your great find and let us know what part of the country your from. There is a lot of chance your not far from another Hodaka nut. What kind of idle issue, fast idle or blubber won't stay idle kind of thing? What did you mix the pre mix at?

One thing to know about the 03 engine is that the left crank bearing does not get lubricated unless the oil injection is functioning. There is no hole for premix to reach this bearing unless the case has been modified to do so. I believe that the 03 is the only Hodaka model that is this way. So use caution running premix alone.

The left crank seal can be replaced without splitting the cases. This seal is critical to the safe operation of the motor. The other seals are of course important, but their failure usually result in leaking oil and/or excessive smoke and not a seizure. Setting up for a pressure test is well worth while to verify your seals, cylinder gaskets and case sealant.

As for your oil injection, it is pretty simple. Remove the cover and observe the oil pump cam. At rest, there is a line on the cam that will line up with a line on the pump. The stop tang can be carefully bent to align these two lines. Then, adjust the oil pump cable to actuate the cam at the same time that the throttle slide actuates. That's it.

Shop manual? The best one is the Model 94/94A Wombat 95 Combat Wombat manual offered by Paul here at the Strictly Hodaka website. It is a must. Yes there are a couple of special tools required, but pretty minimal compared to what most engine work would require.
