Shock Question

Post by viclioce »

Are the shocks for our bikes rebuildable? I'd be interested in knowing. If they are rebuildable is there a guide or "How To" on rebuilding them? My Ace 100 shocks don't appear to have much, if any, life in them. I understand there is a spring removal tool available, and I am guessing there wouldn't be if you couldn't rebuild the shocks. Please advise. Thanks! ; D Victor

Ferris Buhler is not available, but he said to tell you Bill Cook has shocks at a reasonable price.

Paul has them too. Sometimes they go on sale.

OK! That's what I wanted to know. Bill doesn't currently have them in stock. I have a friend who has a bunch of pairs of shocks. I told him as long as they are 12.5" center to center on the holes (and maybe chrome!), that would be all I need. Does the 12.5" convert to roughly 280mm, 310mm or 320mm, or do we need some other size? ; D Victor

One inch equals 25.4mm. 12.5 inches is 317.5mm.

So either the 315mm or the 320 mm should work then! Thanks. I had looked up the conversion because I couldn't remember it and got the same number! ; D Victor

Victor, be careful about the diameter of the shock spring, some of the new shocks and springs are too big around to fit without rubbing. Its just not the length that is important. Be careful, to make sure you get all measurements and make sure if you can find out if whom ever you buy from has fitted their shock to a Hodaka. Bruce Young

Take look at your shocks to note the "skinny" lower body in the area which overlaps the sprocket. The skinny part allows chain clearance. Not all shocks are slender enough in that area to work well on a Hodie.

So Ed. Do you have a notion as to what the largest diameter of the bottom of the shock could be to give clearance for the chain? ; D Victor

I could come up with something, except for the fact that I am away from home right now. So, no I can't provide any dimensions which might be helpful.

Well I measured the shock on the bike. The spring has a circumference of 7 inches, which divided by Pi = 2.23 (rounded) inches in diameter. So as long as the shock spring and base does not have a diameter greater than 2.25" it should work nicely.

Now, is the stock length, eye center to eye center, supposed to be 12.5 inches or 13.5 inches for an Ace 100? When I measure the existing shocks I get 12.5" but I don't know if I'm getting that because that's the correct length or if it's because the shock is worn out and no longer develops enough rebound to extend to 13.5 inches.

Greg (Zyx) is telling me they should be 13.5", but, I'm not sure if that's for the Super Rat frame he's running or if the frames of the Super Rat and the Ace are basically the same distance across the shock mount points. ; D Victor
