Hello Everyone,

I totally bought out the remnants of a Hodaka dealership back in 1997. Since then, I've been sitting on almost all of my parts for 18 years. I just recently got my antique plate for my 1977 Road Toad and have been enjoying the heck out of it.

Get to the point....

My questions are these..

Will a Wombat 125, or any 125 top end bolt on to the 1977 Road Toad bottom end?

2nd, what cylinder heads interchange with the 1974 Super Combat?

Finally, I have multiple cylinder heads that are numbered 9_2501. The 2nd number is literally a block with no digit. They are clearly 125 heads, but I don't know which ones.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,

Bill

Hodaka owner since 1997.

Oooooo, an initial massive Hodakaitis attack which went into low intensity remission for years? i wonder how many of us match that profile?

No, none of the 125 top ends will bolt on to the Road Toad bottom end (different cylinder spigot dimensions).

All of the production 125cc heads will bolt-on to a Super Combat and vice-versa. However, you can get into trouble with compression issues by making such changes, so be aware that simply bolting on a different head may not be a good thing to do.

The 125 cylinder heads can only be identified by combustion chamber volume (or shape and volume if you really know your stuff) -- and I can't tell you how to discern which is which.

Welcome aboard the forum - we'll all certainly try to help you handle your "disease" (Hodakaitis)!

A super combat heads combustion chamber is smooth die cast and kinda funnel shaped and a combat wombat has a pronounced machined quench band

I know the super combat and the 03 wombat heads left the second digit blank. I think the later 100 heads had the blank second digit also. All the combat wombat and wombat heads I have seen had the second digit indicated.....either a 4 for wombat or 5 for the combat wombat. There is a distinct difference between the 03 wombat and super combat heads. Pictures of the combustion chambers would help identify what you have. I did not have a picture of the super combat head.

Below is the combat wombat combustion chamber. The radial grooves were added and will not be on non modified heads.

This is the 03 wombat combustion chamber with added radial grooves. Notice the machined groove around the out side of the combustion chamber. The super combat head also has this groove and it is an original Hodaka feature on these. Another possibility exists and that is the late model 100cc engines had heads similar to the 125's but with smaller combustion chambers.

If you can post some pics we might be able to identify what you have.

Danny,

Thanks for the help. I'm quite certain the two heads below are my Super Combat heads. I have 2 super combats so I'm pretty sure these are the parts.

Both of these heads have the 9_2501 stamping. The Super combat takes the 972501 I was looking for.

Also below is a 1975 Road Toad Head. It is also stamped 9_2501 but the combustion chamber measures smaller, for a 100cc.

Finally, on another topic, I have 2 engines with the letter code E. The chart on this site was extremely helpful in helping me identify all of my other engines, but I can't find these two. They are both 100cc and have the ACE 100 magneto cover. Are they possible late model Hodaka 100 engines used in Steens or Fuji's? The exact engine numbers are E20036 and E22767.

Thanks for your help,

Bill

Danny,

I just found my own answer on the engines. They are both replacement ACE100 engines. I just needed to dig further into this site.

Bill,

The heads you have pictured are identified correctly. You should be aware small changes in combustion chamber volume can affect compression causing reduced performance or engine damage. I try to shoot for between 155 to 165 psi cranking compression on the combat and super combat engine. As long as you are using original non modified Hodaka parts you are usually ok. Cranking compression is one of those things that should be verified.
