speedometer grease fitting

Has anyone tried to grease their speedometer drive? If so, what did you use for a grease fitting. Seems that the hole is 5.5mm in dia.

Yes, I have greased many of them. I completely disassemble the unit. Thoroughly clean all of the parts and then assemble it packed with Bel-Ray waterproof grease.
I always find enough grit inside to warrant disassembly.

A 5.5 mm hole? Sure someone didn't shoot it with an AR 15?

I removed the worm gear, but not the drive gear. In order to remove that, the grease seal would have to be removed, which would destroy it. Have it all done and back on the Combat.

I'm glad I saw this topic. Never thought that the speedo drive required grease -- I had always shot a squirt of gear oil or 30 wt motor oil in the hole under the Phillips screw (no grease fittings).
The speedo needle(s) are swing again so greasing the drive should settle them down again. A tapered nozzle grease gun should get the grease in there.

I screwed a zert fitting into the speedo drive and give the drive a shot of grease a couple times a year. That seems to take care of things.
