There is an article on page 58 of the August issue of American Motorcyclist magazine (received by AMA members) that was very enlightening. The theory is that trees emit gaseous chemicals called phytoncides. Trees use these anti-microbial chemicals as a natural defense against disease and insects. In humans, exposure to these volatile organic compounds supposedly causes a significant increase in the activity of immune system cells. Studies have been done by several groups that indicated phytoncides also lower blood pressure, reduce stress, improve mood, increase focus, accelerate recovery, increase energy and improve sleep.
We have been knowing for a long time that riding motorcycles in the woods makes us feel good. Now we know why.

Re: Woods Riding Revitalizes, Recharges
A few months ago I wrote and article for the Resonator Revisited call " Motorcycles and Mental Health". It talked about the many studies done that connect motorcycle riding and the benefits to mental health.
Now it seems there is a physical benefit as well when riding in the woods. I think I have benefited on both ends. As far as me running into trees, I don't think I am alone when it comes to being attracted to trees, as this trials video will attest too from a TST 2013 ride. My apologies to Mr. John Stark. A fine 73 year old trials rider.

Rick, I did read your article a few months ago in the Resonator on Motorcycling and Mental Health. Also in the last issue was an article by 79 year old Bob Canfield on how motorcycling keeps you young. I briefly met Bob on the starting line at the ISDTRR in Oklahoma last year and was impressed by his stature and perseverance. I'm 72 and he got away from me! I prescribe all of the above for good health and a feeling of well being.---

Maxie,
Ah yes, Bob is a special rider indeed. I first met him a the 2005 Hodaka Days. They were showing a projected film version of the 1973 Peter Starr film, " The Bad Rock Ride". I sat down next to Bob and his wife during the show. His wife had never seen it. Funny, since he was highly profiled. We all know now how Bob broke his leg during that ride. It was fun hearing him critique the event on the film. The film is now available on DVD from Paul. It is filled with interviews of the Hodaka legends, including Bob, Harry, Chuck and Paul. Shameless promotion? Not at all.

Hey Rick, thanks for the info, I'll order the DVD on my next order! Ah, technology--My DVD player failed the other day so I purchased a new one. The cords have all been updated of course and won't play on my not-too-old TV. First a new TV, I'll get there soon, I'm working on it!
