Hello all,
Am new to the forum and apologize if this topic has come up before.
I want to convert my toad to run straight pre-mix(32:1 syn). Are there any recommendation on what jet sizes I need to go to?
I know the stock is 170 main and 50 pilot and third clip on the needle, (air screw 1.5 turns out).
Any help would be much appreciated. THANKS!

Re: Road Toad Jetting
Welcome to the Forum! I doubt any jetting changes will be needed, at least not from removing the oil injection.

PS--Here's a couple of pictures of a RT with the oil injection removed if you haven't got that far.

Re: Road Toad Jetting
I recently compared the jetting of my two Road Toads, which are stock and still use the oil pump, to a friends Road Toad that has had the oil pump removed. All 3 bikes are operated at low altitude (1200 ft and below).
Road Toad #1: 50 pilot/170 main/5EJ13 4th notch down/Air screw 3.0
Road Toad #2: 50 pilot/170 main/5EJ13 3rd notch down/Air screw 3.0
Road Toad
w/o pump: 50 pilot/180 main/5EJ13 3rd notch down/Air Screw 2.5
You will want to verify that your needle is indeed the 5EJ13. This needle was one item included in a modifcation that all model 99 Road Toads received. If your needle is something other than the 5EJ13, then more research is called for.
Also, I find that the Road Toads are a bit difficult to dial in the pilot jetting. I believe that the 50 pilot is too rich for starting and for getting the optimum idle with the air screw at or near 1 1/2 turns out. I also believe that if you go any leaner than 50 on the pilot, that the overall throttle range is too lean for cruising the back roads. So... I would not change the pilot. I think you will find the best idle and therefore the best low end response to be at more than 2 turns out.
Since my friends bike, without the oil pump, runs a 180 main, I might suggest that you start there.

Thanks Dale, I'm taking notes. I haven't started our project engine yet. As I remember I did up it to a 180 for break-in.

Re: Road Toad Jetting
While it sounds like your Toad is a model 99, pls note that the model 02 (later Toad), while identical in most respects to the 99, used significantly different carb parts (jets, needles). I've switched Toad/Squirt(01) carbs from early (99) parts to later (02) parts myself. While either can be made to work, I suspect the later parts might be easier to tune; the 50 main is really big!

Re: Road Toad Jetting
Bob, I totally agree that the 50 pilot seems really big. I have spent many hours testing smaller pilots and while it can improve the lower end, anything less than the 50 gets lean when cruising 40+ down the road. If there is a better set up for the 99 Toads, I would sure like to learn about it.
