GAS TANK CLEANING

Post by dirtsquirt74 »

I tried cleaning my Hodaka tank with lug bolts and kerosene. Worked well in the past but this time it left a fair amount of rust granuals. Thinking I didn't buy the original formula. What product is recommended to clean this tank?

I have used radiator cleaner and BB's but I would also consider the new water based rust dissolvers you can get at the hardware store, actually work pretty well. Evaporust if I remember the name correctly.

Rustol from SH or Prep & Etch (phosphoric acid) from hardware store - works every time and works fast.
I like fence staples for agitation, good weight and scratch factor, but anything would work.

P.S. Most any acid would work - vinegar on the weak side of the spectrum, to Muriatic acid on the harsh side - ton's of info available on the web.
Be sure to rinse with soap or something basic, then I like to follow with Acetone and compressed air for a good dry.

I used Metal Rescue, you can get it from Amazon by the Gal. I poured in 1/2 Gal let it soak, moving it around for about a day. Then added BB's, small nuts and bolts. Then Made sure the gas cap was tight and the petcocks turn off. Then I wrapped it in an old blanket wrapped it in duck tape. Put it in my dryer plus added a pillow to make sure the tank was tight in the dryer and turned it on. No heat. I would check on it. After a while all three of my tanks came out clean. That dryer spinning around and around plus the Metal Rescue really cleaned them up.

Metal Rescue is also available at Home Depot. I have not used it but from what I hear it works about the same as Evaporust which is available at Harbor Freight and Lowes has it in 32oz size.
