1975 Dirt Squirt O1

Post by motovate »

Tried the search but couldn't get it to work so trying it this way.

I'm looking over (via web) a Dirt squirt. Figured out that it is a 1975 sold as a 1976 and frame /engine numbers say it is the 1975 O1 Dirt squirt.
From the Hodaka book I determined it should be reeded and it kinda looks like that may be the case. It also said that the Squirts were essentially Toads with out the lights, 125 lower end and tranny and 100 top end and that they had the oil pumpWiringing harness was same as toads with hook ups for lights so if there isn't a lighting coil one can be put into it and lights can be hooked up with a switch, regulatcurrentent limiter and maybe a battery - fairly easy fix if one can find a lighting coil.

I've seen quite abit in the past about the Dirt squirts but thought they were all small frame mini/kid size so I didn't pay real close attention.

I could not see in the photo's any oil tank and the stock air filter housing is gone using a single pod air filter so it is fairly open --- but it kind of looked like there might be a oil line coming down from under the fuel tank down to the case - and the paint looks like it is a Dirt Squirt tank.

The big question ????? I seem to remember that on the pump models the oil was fed direct to a bearing and that if you quit using the pump and went to pre mix there was an issue with that bearing not getting oiled and the fix was to drill a hole some where to allow the pre mix access to the bearing - - - - or something!!!!!!!! Also should this one be a 19"F/17"R or a 21"F 18"R tire set up?

Can someone clue me in on this? Video of the bike shows it pretty much together with surface rust and it does run up and down the road - sounds fairly good but looks well used - kind of looks like there is no baffle in the pipe but hard to tell.

I'm more concerned about the oil pump/premix issue. But I'll be glad to learn all I can about the squirts.

Thanks.

WELLLLLLLLLLL I think my spell check didn't work too well and I've got a big long run on sentence. Should be regulator, current limiter and a couple of periods and commas. Clear as mud though!!!

The 01 Dirt Squirt is, like you said, a Road Toad without lights. The engine was designed with oil injection, but will run fine on pre-mix with no modes to the engine. There is no force feed to any of the bearings, just a banjo fitting on the intake manifold where the oil is injected. I would remove the oil pump and blank off the opening, just to save the oil pump. Running the oil pump with no oil supply would likely ruin it. Also make sure the oil injection fitting on the manifold is blanked off as well.

The Squirt runs a 17' rear and 19" front wheels. You can swap them for 18" rear and 21" front from the Combat Wombat, Super Combat, or late model Super Rat but it would be beneficial to keep the Squirt front brake as it is a better set up. I'm pretty sure Paul sells a spoke kit to lace up a 21" rim to the 01 Squirt front brake. The larger wheels will work better in the rough and you will also get a better selection of tires. Keep in mind that you will likely want to change the gearing if you go to a larger rear wheel.

I think is am correct in saying that the model 03 Wombat is the only case that doesn't have an oil hole for the left bearing as it is fed totally from the oil pump so you should be safe using oil mix fuel. I think I have seen the bike your are talking about and if it is the same one the front forks are not stock. Hopefully they were installed as an improvement but I am not sure what they are.

Thanks- This one is on Ebay. It's about 400 miles away from the homested so it is kind of close enough to go get. I went back and looked at the forks - you were right on - looks like maybe early Kawasaki forks?? Like you can move the wheel forward and lengthen the wheel base a little. I'm grinding on it - might be a little spendy with the work needed and cost to go get it total.

Thanks again to both of you.
