missing serial number
I recently bought a number of parts bikes and boxes of parts. One of the engines has no serial number on the case. The spot where it should be does not look like it has been ground down. It is on a Super rat frame. Anyone ever seen this before?
Re: missing serial number
Were the cases available individually left and right? If they were maybe they didn't have serial numbers on them. Just a thought. Paul may need to answer this one.

Yes indeedy, cases were available individually (left or right) . . . and spare parts cases did not have serial numbers.

I also don't think the replacement engines had serial numbers. ----------------Clarence
Re: missing serial number
As Ed mentioned Hodaka offered blank replacement engine cases which could be used to build a complete engine like the one you have. All replacement engines though were stamped with an identification letter and numbers. The listing of what letter identification to model is on our ID page.

Re: missing serial number
I have engines that do not have serial numbers, could be of the earlier years. I never lost a right hand engine half that I can remember. Usual left cases from chain damage. The nice thing about bad weather tis more folks on the forum. The older I get the more wiser Ed becomes, his memory doesn't seem to fade. Thanks for all the input. I just got into the Hodaka game so I will probably be asking more questions. I got a 73 Wombat that is running, super combat that is partially restored and 3 parts bikes. 2 Super Rats and another Wombat plus lots of parts and pieces. I am hoping to get one of the Rats fixed up for a grandson and finish up the Super combat.

Re: missing serial number
With the possible exception of prototype engines and possibly a very small number of engines produced for "in house" use by Hodaka or PABATCO, I don't think the factory ever shipped out complete engines without serial numbers. So far as I know, ALL complete engines assembled at the factory in Japan got a serial number at the time of assembly.
Of course it is quite possible that the US Distributors may have assembled some engines from parts inventories to meet specific needs at specific times - and those engines would likely not have been serial numbered in any way.
