Re: carb reed help
Quibbling just a teensy bit . . . but it looks to me like the window in the piston has been enlarged.

Bronco,
Just noticed you are in North Carolina. I am in Virginia and may not be too far from you. Grew up in NC just east of Raleigh.

Hey ED,
Danny Cooke
Piston came out of an engine that was restored for one of our forum members. You know I have seen factory combat wombat pistons in three versions. One with very narrow width, this one and last wider but narrower and piston pin relocated to the side. I think this one just looks bigger because of the angle / magnification.Bullfrog wrote:Quibbling just a teensy bit . . . but it looks to me like the window in the piston has been enlarged.

Re: carb reed help
I had an unfinished modified cylinder laying on the bench if this helps in the conversation.
Hmmm, what started to be an easy snapshot turned into a photographic challenge! Don't try this at home!

Bronco70,
Checked your location on the map and I am headed that way this weekend to visit my mom in Benson. You are not to far away for me to detour a bit and assist. What do you think?

Roger that Danny. I could easily be off base on my memory of the window in the CW piston.

Bronco70. Take Danny up on his offer to help. ANY help he gives you will be worth it's weight in gold! Danny still rebuilds Hodaka motors for Vintage Racers and is a valuable asset to have I n your corner! Let him run away with your motor and go pick it up from him with your checkbook in hand when he says it's done! You won't regret it! He has helped me emensely over the past 2.5 years & really knows what he's doing with these Hodaka motors! Victor

JEFF. Don't worry about it too much. And with Danny's help, you can turn this motor into a real screamer! I'm sure he will give you "options!" Go with the best one for you! Danny has never misguided me on any of the 4 restos I've been doing! Victor

Re: carb reed help
I will be putting this back together as soon as parts arive
The 26 mm carb had 130 main jet may have drilled after looking at it closer so I ordered a180 jet which is jet called for on 03 reeded wombat
If doesnt seem rich enough I will go to 190

Re: carb reed help
What kind of cylinder did this end up being, a reed conversion CW, a stock CW without reed modifications? Fill in the blanks for best results.

Re: carb reed help
Bronco - the operating rule is that you MUST "find" rich, then start making adjustments toward "lean". Stop at the setting which just gets rid of the "richness" (one step leaner than rich). I can't tell you what you need - too many variables - you have to find it by trial and (hopefully, not too much) error.
Olddog - it has been established to be a Combat Wombat cylinder with very basic mods for reed valve. Though I don't think it has been established whether or not there are extra holes drilled in the piston. (One of the variables regarding proper jetting.)
Ed
PS: Bronco, do you have access to, and have you read, the proper procedures for tuning the Mikuni round slide carburetor? The very FIRST step is proper pilot circuit tuning.

Re: carb reed help
Bronc70's combat wombat was previously owned by Harlen Diem. Cylinder was bored to .080 over with a two ring Wiseco piston. A slot had been cut in the piston to match the victory port. Piston, rings and bore where in excellent condition. If I remember correctly, holes were drilled in the cylinder to connect the intake tract with the victory port. An 03 Wombat reed assembly and carb was attached. For simplicity sake the 4 holes for the reed valve are not going to be drilled at this time.
As Ed stated, just to many things changed and will have to "find rich" and go from there. I did review carb tuning with Bronco70. Spoke with him today and he indicated the air screw was turned out 1 1/2 turn. With this setting he could turn the air screw in or out and the engine would loose rpms....sounds like pilot circuit is close.
