Super Rat 98 rim lacing help

Post by SuperRat01 »

I just received the spokes that I ordered for my Super Rat 98 front rim. My problem is that my old spokes were all the same length, whereas, the ones that I just ordered are two different lengths. I tried to lace it today with no luck (my first time ever trying this). Are they supposed to be two different lengths or did I get sent the wrong spokes? Is there a diagram somewhere showing the correct lacing patterns? Thanks, Linc

The Super Rat spokes should all be the same length. Maybe you have the spoke set that laces the Super Rat rim to a Road Toad style front hub. I know Paul sells a set for that purpose.

Thanks Brian, I guess they sent the wrong ones. I will have to get ahold of Paul and change them out. Linc

Measure the length of each of the two lengths sent to you, then measure your old ones. Then call Paul. That will help to verify what you need.

If you order from Bucannons good luck, they have a good product but they keep no records on any model. Anytime you order from them you need to send them sample spokes. They sent you the set for the Road Toad hub as that is for some reason the only front Hodaka wheel everyone uses. So your screwed, even when we order for the RT hub we still send them a sample from the wheel we have.

I have had no problems with ordering spokes from Strictly Hodaka, but did need to know the length I needed to verify which ones to get. Problem with ordering just by model is that most spokes look alike, and over the years, things get changed on a bike. since Paul has the spokes and you have your old ones, measure them from elbow to thread end, and send an email or give a call. It isn't hard to verify the right parts as long as you have the old ones.

Another question is whether either of the ones sent to you were right. I understand that one half was longer than the other, but was either group correct? If so you only need to swap out the wrong ones. If neither is right, it could be anything, even just a pick error which can be corrected. Also, keep in mind that often spokes for left and right are not the same length because for a given application, the rim may not be intended to center on the hub, even if the hub is the same diameter both sides.

But as a starting place, you had a wheel that worked. You need new spokes the same length as what you have. Measure and report. I have had to do the same thing in the past, and my bike is a one owner, but after 44 years, it is hard to remember what all I did to it back in the 70's, so just give Strictly Hodaka a chance to make it right.

Hi Superrat01,
We had a bad storm yesterday which knocked out the power so I am just seeing this post.
If you were sent spokes for the front wheel that are different lengths then this would have been for a conicle hub ( Not a Super Rat hub).
Sorry we do make mistakes when sending parts out. I hate this happened to you. I do not see any messages on my phone machine?
Let me know your full name and I can make it right and get the correct spokes out today.
Sorry
Paul

Paul, the number on the green paper is #949208. The 18 shorter spokes that you sent me are the same size as my original spokes (9-3/8"). Did you want me to keep the 18 shorter spokes and you just send me 18 more that are 9-3/8 long or do you want me to send the whole set back? By the way, the spokes that you sent were 18@ 9-3/8" and 18 @ 10-1/4". Thanks, Lincoln Evans
