Check Your Battery

Post by Larry S »

This post is for the newbies.

A Hodaka doesn't need a battery to run. The battery is to keep your lights bright when the engine is at idle. It also acts as a voltage regulator. On a dirt bike with no lights you don't need a battery. If you run your street bike with no battery in place, you will burn out your lights. No big deal except for the headlight. They're starting to get rare.

I was on my way to the hardware store on my Ace 100B. At a stop light I noticed my brake light didn't work unless I revved the engine. Having a brake light is kind of important. The battery is four years old. I know a lead acid battery is good for about three years. I tried to remember when the last time I had checked the battery - NEVER.

After returning home, I pulled the battery to check it. It had about a half inch electrolyte in each cell. I topped off the electrolyte with distilled water and put it on the charger. So far, it's holding a charge. I know I'm on borrowed time. The first time I turn the key on, and step on the brake (engine not running) and brake light doesn't light up, I'm off to the battery store.
