New to group!

Post by budpat105 »

Where to start? How about 1973, I was 13. After days of begging my Dad let me trade my Honda SL70 and my mowing money for a used (very) Super rat. He allowed me to race it at local tracks here in central IL. Hauled it in a Vista cruiser station wagon, front wheel hanging over tailgate. I learned a lot from that bike, but swapped it for a new 1974 Yamaha MX100. Fast forward 41 years, I just bought a combat wombat. Where to start? The carb has been butchered by last owner,I'm wanting to build a rider. Wrong tank also and no number plates. I'm going to start with fuel system first. Can I put a new mikuni VM28 carb on the bike by using their manifold adapter? Any other ideas? Any great Combat facts I should learn? Thanks to everyone for any help! Man, this Hodaka bug is really addicting..

Welcome aboard! Look forward to the information as you get it back in the dirt. I'm of the same era, started on an ACE 100 and then a Super Combat. Still in the process of getting a '73 Wombat on the road so full of questions myself. It's nice to work on a simple bike again.

Get a Wombat/Combat shop manual from Strictly Hodaka - best money you can spend, great manual. You have some great resources near you. Welcome!

Welcome! I too returned after forty years. I was not without motorcycles but I was without Hodaka motorcycles. A barn find lured me back and it has been a fun and rewarding experience. I've met lots of fun and interesting people on the site and at the track, just like the good old days! Enjoy and keep us posted on the project. :)

PS---Don't tell anyone, but I even raced a cross country in the 70+ class last year! What fun! (I didn't win of course, but hey, I was there and finished and it did put a big smile on my face that lasted for months.)

You can adapt the spigot mount carb to the CW with the manifold adaptor, in fact Strictly Hodaka sells both the adaptor and the carb. I used this set up on my CW with no problems.

There was a string of service bulletins for the CW dealing with problems like flywheel rivets coming loose, broken rear number plate mounts, etc. There are also some hop up tips such as better breathing for the air filter, reed valve and porting mods, etc. The Hodaka Yahoo users group has many of these articles.

Regards,

Brian
