Noob questions re: '76 Wombat

Post by Irish John »

I just acquired a nice '76 Wombat which is running but needs some TLC. Although I rode a Hodaka "back in the day", this is the first one i've owned so I would appreciate any insights you can share.

Doing an initial check of the bike I know it needs for seals and dust boots. How do I know from the schematics which forks seals to order? Also the clutch is sticking, I suspect it may be from the bike sitting for quite a while. Thoughts on cleaning up the plates or should I just put a new clutch pack in it? If the later, which ones do I use for the Wombat?

Lastly (for now) any known glitches on the '76 Wombat I should look for?
Thanks for the help.

Welcome to the group. You should not have trouble ordering the correct fork seals if you shop by model number here at the Strictly Hodaka site. Your 03 Wombat forks should measure 34mm if they are original.

It is common for the clutch plates to stick when the bike has sat for an extended period. Sometimes they break free and are fine but sometimes require a thorough cleaning. Unless the bike was abused, the plates and friction discs are probably fine.

The first thing that I can think of that is unique to the 03 Wombat is that the oil injection has two feed lines. One to the intake manifold and the other feeds the left crank bearing. So this model has to either have a working oil pump or else have an engine case modification prior to just using pre-mixed fuel. If you plan to use the oil injection then I would spend some time to check both its adjustment and to confirm that it is pumping oil. There are other posts that describe how to do this.

Look at this link http://www.strictlyhodaka.com/Articles.asp?ID=252and go to the bottom of the page for a link to very well written instructions on doing the job. Post up some photos of your bike, it will give us a good idea of what you working with.

Regarding the fork seals. I have found draining the fork oil and adding new oil sometimes does the trick, the oil breaks down and gets very thin overtime, and water can seep in there as well. Unless they are obviously trashed.

Good luck. And I had a sticky clutch on my combat wombat, loosened up after a bit.

Thanks everyone. I'll post some photos when I get her home.

Now follow up questions:can someone point me to the correct links?

What is this modification you speak? I thought Hodakas just ran premix?

How do I check to see if the oil pump is working or adjusted right?

You can use the search feature at the top of the page to find previous topics. For example, if you search for the word "tang" you will find several discussions on adjusting the oil pump tang.

The later model, street legal, Hodakas came with oil injection. Your 03 model is the only one that has the left crank seal lube feature making the modification required should you choose to eliminate the oil pump. Many opt to do just that but it is a personal preference.
