frame number without letter designation
frame number without letter designation
Looking at a 1973 Hodaka Combat Wombat with serial #16828 but engine has the #J04822. Hate to buy it knowing the letter designation is not on the frame. What does everyone think?

What about the steering head ID plate? Also, examine the number stamped in the steering head gusset closely . . . the "D" may just be lightly stamped.

No ID Plate on the steering shaft and can't see any faded letter before the number.

Looking at the serial numbers here: http://www.strictlyhodaka.com/v/vspfile ... esnut1.pdf, without a frame letter designation, it's either an Ace 90, Combat Wombat (95), or a Road Toad (99) frame.
Obviously not an Ace 90, and there were some minor but significant changes in the frame for the Road Toad, i.e. foot pegs, brake lever, etc... I think it's safe to assume it is a Combat Wombat. Also... If it's on a Wombat frame, neither the 94 or 94A Wombat had serials in that range, but the Combat Wombat did... according to the chart linked above.
But Ed's comments would confirm.

Hummm... Missing VIN tag and also missing one letter of the stamped VIN on the frame? Red flags to me...

Is there a way to attach the pictures of the numbers on the frame and motor for your review?

Re: frame number without letter designation
If it is a factory painted black frame........and assuming it is a Combat Wombat, it will not have the extra battery box bracket nor the horn bracket near the coil bracket. Richard

Was the frame powder coated or heavily painted, maybe filling in the letter designation? Pictures?

There were only a very few Hodaka's made where the engine #'s and frame #'s matched. None of the Combat Wombat's had matching numbers.
The engine letter you provide with the letter "J" does make the engine cases and most likely engine a Combat Wombat.
Are there two small holes in the front of the steering head where the rivets that would have held the ID plate would have been?
Can you send photos of the frame in question?
One of my Combat Wombats is frame D- 16644 but there is no engine ID. It is an engine Harry built for me and we used new cases.
The vin # of 16828 would fall into the Combat Wombat or Road Toad (99) classification or actually even an Ace 90.
