It should have 2 positions besides off. First stop is run, next stop is run with lights on.

I just checked the key one side it has a symbol like 4 try angles with the small ends touching in the middle. And it says hope above it. Other side it has 107 the number 1 doesn't look like it goes with the 07 the 07 r deeper. The key switch has all the right wire plugs and colors. I put a new wire harness on from stricky hodaka. There's just one wire that's in the new harness that's not on the key switch. That's the Grey wire. It comes from the emergency switch. The only other difference is the blue wire coming from key switch plugs into the black wire from battery.

You should definately have an ignition switch with 3 positions. Off, daytime and nighttime. If your key is marked "Hope", then I believe that your switch is correct and that it must be physically broken and not allowing the turn to be made to the 3rd position. A little shot of WD40 into it might help???

As for the wiring. Yes, there will be a blue wire from the switch to the black battery wire. Blue is negative on the wiring harness that ties to the negative side of the battery which is going to be black. I have no idea what the grey wire is about. Maybe that is why it is not connected???

To help with the type of keys for the different models, here is a direct quote from Paul that is taken from another post titled "Broken Key".

"the majority of the key's were stamped "hope" and the other side "107".
These keys were specific for all models from the Ace 100B through
the 250SL.These keys were cut on the right side.

Ace 90's were cut on the left side and stamped "3121" with a round head.

1968/69 Ace 100's with the ignition switch face that is stamped "3121"
also with a round head and the key is also stamped "3121". These keys
are cut on the right as the "hope/107" keys but are not cut the same as them."

The Road toad, 03 Wombat, 175SL, and 250SL had two position switches - on/off. The Ace 90/100/94/94A had three position switches; according to the wiring diagrams that I looked at.

Sounds like you have either a Road Toad or an 03 Wombat switch. It will work, like you found out, but the correct switch , if you really wanted it, should have three positions like Dale said, and the wires will match up.

Good points Roger (as always). You are correct that the later models such as the Road Toad and the 03 Wombat have only 2 positions even though they use the same key (Hope). I am trying to remember the earlier models and since most of my bikes are currently in storage, I can not confirm this, but I believe that prior to the bikes having the "emergency switch", that they also were only 2 positions and used the different keys.

I just looked at a 2 position switch for a Road Toad and the switch is stamped with "off" in about the 10 o'clock position and a dot at 12 o'clock for the "on" position. It is also stamped "ignition" across the bottom of the face of the switch.

So certainly, Cherokee could have the later 2 position switch...
