So i decided to purchase for $300 a 1976 250SL that was apparently sitting on a tree for 10 years.
I knew i had my work cut out for me but when i took out the flywheel cover and a sea of water came out i knew i was in trouble.
Everything was rusted beyond recognition. After many days banging i managed to get the flywheel out but in the process i nicked one of the transformer coils. They are also covered in rust and grime.
The stator part seems to be out of circulation so i am stuck.
Any ideas? Is there another stator assembly that i can harvest coils from and mod them to mine?
Any advice will be appreciated.

It looks like the stator assy is specific to the 250SL, but...
The stator assembly was not made BY Hodaka, but rather FOR Hodaka. Japanese motorcycle manufacturers used outside electrical component companies to supply there electrical components.This was typical of the Japanese motorcycle industry. What I am trying to say is that there may be other brands out there that used the same stator assy. I would suggest you visit a swap meet or motorcycle salvage yard to see if it can be matched to a stator from another bike.

I have read where Suzuki stators from some of the mid 70s 250s MXers with the internal rotors will work on the SL motor. I haven't read anything about stators from their dual purpose bikes that would have lighting coils working. Sometimes can search this stuff on Ebay and enlarge the pictures enough to compare parts. I know many Honda and Suzuki ignition parts interchange with the 125 Hodakas.

I have replaced SL coils with ones from Suzuki TS 250's out of the 70"s.

so i got myself a coil assembly for the suzuki TS 250 and it is almost identical to the one in the 250SL. One of the three coils is twice as big though and the wiring is a bit confusing. Any more help is greatly appreciated.

Does the one you nicked work? Test it against continuity and resistance values for that assembly. If it still works, clean it with alcohol and a toothbrush, spray the nick with clear lacquer, and use it. If the nick separated a wind in the wire, lift the damaged winding a bit, solder a jump, and isolate the repair with a bit of heavy paper and spray it with clear lacquer. Or, stator wire is out there. You can simply rewind it with matching gauge of wire. Or, if one of the other brand stator assemblies has the right wire and enough of it, you can salvage the wire from the other assembly to use to rewind the one you have.
