Hey guys, im new to the forum, im from PA here. My first bike ever was a road toad 100, I think I pushed the bike more than I ever road it due to it breaking down often LOL. But it was the reason I became a technician and now work for myself doing plumbing/electrical work, appliance repair etc. i never could keep it running for long when I was younger.

I just recently came back to Hodaka's, the night I brought it home I cleaned the carbs on my Wombat. its a 1970, I pushed it outside, kicked it a few times and it was late, so I kicked it until it just about fired over a few times, then decided to wait til the next day when it was a earlier as to not upset the neighbors. Well the next day it now has very intermittant spark. The bike has been sitting for sometime, it seems if I flip the key switch around it will intermittantly spark, but not consistant. The night I brought it home it was consistant, is it possilbe this has a condenser that is not working or is the key switch likely, before I tear into it tomorrow.

My wombat has just 292 miles on it so it was never ridden much, as im sure most havent. Its the street legal edition, I really wanted a Road Toad, but couldnt find one upon searching. Im told the 125 is a little better engine though.

try unplugging the key switch and see if you get good spark then. if not try cleaning the points. let us know how you make out

Like Dirtsquirt80 said and set the point gap (.012 - .015). Also, don't hesitate to try a different spark plug (NGK B8HS). Check wire connections of the Blue and Black leads heading from the magnito area and run up under the fuel tank to the coil. Make sure plug lead is in good shape and fits tight on the plug. Has a kill switch been added to the bike? If so, it could be grounding out your ignition lead as well.

1970 Wombat? That can not be correct. What is your frame number and engine number?

I have both Wombats and Road Toads. Very different motors. I like the Road Toad personally. Both = fun!

Cool! Welcome back to the Hodaka world!
Loads of excellent advice on this forum. All of the above is spot-on. I might add that you check to make sure your connections are clean and solid (grounds too). If you have a chance, pull that flywheel (use a Hodaka flywheel puller, NOT a gear puller), and have a look at the stator wiring - make sure no connections are loose, wiring is intact, and the coils look okay

I will check all that out tonight, thanks for the advice. It's like déjà vu owning this bike I can't wait to tear into it again to see how I make out with a hodaka this time around, I will post up my serial number later also.

Great bike, If you go to this forum, it's still on the front page listed as (Main Jet setting at 4000 ft Please Help) there is alot of help and information from everybody on help for getting your Wombat to Run. Check it out. They were a great help for me.

Ok guys, got my Wombat fired right up, dirty breaker points. The VIN is c-23612

Now I have a few more questions to ask, what oil and how much should I put in the crankcase? What plug do you guys use? And what oil/fuel mixture do you guys use as mine is not oil injected, and what oil to use in the premix?

Thanks alot for any advice on my new Wombat,

Transmission : 1-1/4 pints or 591cc or .6 liter, Plugs: NGK B-8HS (standard) or NGK B-9HS (cold) The subject what brand or ratio of oil to use is a very popular subject! I have used Golden Spectro and Red Line Oil for the premix at 32:1 to 40:1 ratio. The transmission oil I use is Belray Gear Saver 80W for wet clutches. Make sure you get a Shop Manual for your Wombat if you don't have one. Paul sells all of these items on this website. Glad you got it running again, Team Wombat! Richard

Good to hear!

Your frame number puts it as a Model 94A manufactured in 1973. There should be a manufacture date on the steering stem. The 94A had turn signals. You will want to verify the Engine number too to make sure that it has not be swapped out. You can find the number on the case just in behind where the clutch cable adjuster is on the side cover.

Asking about choice of oils and lubes is always going to start a spirited debate. When I first got back into the Hodaka thing, I was advised Bel-Ray 80W Gear Saver for the tranny and Yamalube 2R @ 32:1 for the premix. They work great for me. On the transmission, it holds 20 oz like stated, but you will only get about 16 oz out of the drain hole. To remove the remaining 4 oz, you will need to remove the clutch cover. This is not typically necessary, but if you are changing brands and if the bike has been sitting for a long time, I would get it drained completely.

In all honesty, Im not usually so cautious about the brands of fluids in my bikes, cars/trucks. However, when I had one of these bikes when I was 16 it was very problematic, and dont want to go down that road again. I was also less knowledgeable then that I am now, that was 28 years ago and im a much better technician now. I picked up the Belray today, and already had the Yamalube 2R.
