Race modifications?
Race modifications?
I was wondering what modifications you would do, to a model 94 125 wombat for vintage racing?
My frame is almost ready, and I was wondering what modifications were being done back in the day.
Thanks Gary

Re: Race modifications?
It seems like you've addressed the "biggies". Extra gusseting at the steering head. Swing arm lengthened and gusseted. "Kicker tubes" added to the frame. Foot pegs relocated (and the original elephant anchor mount bar removed). Yep, looking good!

Keep the rubber side down!
Re: Race modifications?
Depends on what type of racing...MX, cross country, enduro?
Re: Race modifications?
Crash - You've inspired me to get down an old Wombat frame and muck with it for racing. Any chance you can share closer pictures of your foot pegs? I'm interested in how you did those.

Thank you Clarence and Ed, I greatly appreciate your comments.
Ed I am going for the "biggies" lol, I want to build the bike I wished for as a kid!
What every kid riding a Sears mini bike with a 3 1/2 hp Brigs and Straton would want back then!
Now that I am older and have tools, I figured why not.
Other than a front end upgrade, as the budget does not allow for that.
Anything that could be fabricated back in the 70's is fair game.
Mr. Rat as far as racing the bike, it will be local vintage MX racing.
I am not fooling myself, a stock bike would be plenty for me!
Jay this project has been a lot of fun for me.
I say pull the frame out and enjoy! As far as copying me...proceed at you own risk! lol
I am flying by the seat of my pants on most of this.
The foot peg mounts are a work in progress, at the moment.
Left side was easy, right side was a bit more of a problem.
I had to relocate the pivot point hole for the brake pedal, and add a tab for it.
Don't know how it will work out yet, but seems to work so far.
If anyone has any thoughts about things I might miss please let me know.
Thanks Gary

Re: Race modifications?
Crash, be careful with those rear shocks. If they are RFY it turns out the reservoirs are fake! You’re probably better off if you find a set of the 97/98 KYB Shocks, or even a set of the repros from Terry Larson at Hodaka-Parts.com.

Re: Race modifications?
Victor you are correct they are RFY shocks, and they are fake!
when setting up the frame I needed shocks, and at $40 I figured why not.
Lol I know I should have known better, but they were the length I needed.
When I first got them I pressed the schrader valve and barely a hiss came out.
But at least I have a set that I don't have to worry about scratching up while working on it.
The rear shocks will definetly need to be replaced.

Re: Race modifications?
One of the things we did back in the day, was to extend the frame in the front. ----- Clarence
