I’m trying this method. Bought the gauge.
The line on the fly wheel lines up closer to the back mark on the case not the front mark. The library says 2.4mm BTDC. I set it there & it seems way off.
I’ve been gone for 10 days & need to finish this up. Just need to get her to fire.
Should I go back to gapping the points with the flywheel line at the front mark on the case? Or is there a trick to this? Who is familiar with using the BTDC gauge? Victor

Re: 2.4mm BTDC….
It is possible that your case marks are "off" (not likely, but possible). The dial indicator gauge down the spark plug hole allows you to identify TDC with certainty and accuracy . . . and allows you check the alignment of the flywheel rotor mark with the TDC mark on case. Once that is done, you can position the piston at 2.4mm BTDC using the dial indicator . . . and set your points assembly to just open at that point (and confirm your case mark). (Your choice of methods to "indicate" when the points just start to open.) I always like to check the actual (operational) timing setting with a timing light and a running engine (using the confirmed to be accurate case marks). The timing light reveals any errors which might have crept into the point setting process, and "tells" you what your firing point actually is.

Re: 2.4mm BTDC….
When you say back mark and front mark, do you mean reference to the direction of the bike? If so, the front mark (left mark on case) should be TDC. The back mark (mark to the right) should be about 2.4mm's (or .094") BTDC. That is when the point should just start to open. To confirm with a timing light, it should strobe with the line on the flywheel even with the back (right) mark on the cases.

Turns out there was a short in the stator. Repaired the wiring and all is good. She’s singing well now! Victor
