Re: Where to start

Post by taber hodaka »

I will never use clear coat, nor do I steel wool between coats, or sand between coats. I paint all hard to get spots first, making sure they are covered. Moving at the right speed and managing overlap is very important, ovoid dry spots that cause orange peel. Draw a square on a piece of sheet rock and practice. Some rattle cans will have a fan spray which is preferred over a dot. Going too slow will produce runs, too fast can produce splats that are too dry producing the orange peel that requires sanding, dust, grime, grit. Just me. -------------- Clarence

I have settled into this paint for the red frames. This paint & primer in one matches the Rustoleum Safety Red exactly, but it applies easier and second coats without crackling.

For black frames I like the Rustoleum Satin Black. Same type of paint, seems to match the original black frames as best I’ve been able to find!

On my 03 Wombat I used Chevy Victory Red and the matching clear coat to go over the decals.

Clarence. I tried the Rustoleum Safety Red which Max told me about. But, it doesn’t second coat well and tends to crackle.

This color matches the Safety Red exactly. And it has no second coat issues and has less than an hour drying time! :ugeek: Victor

The one thing I am good at (shakey the rattle can). There is no no way to compare a $10.00 can of paint to real paint but the cost difference is probably ten fold. Plus you need the equipment, clean and dust free room with ventilation, experience, no fear and a steady hand don't forget good lighting . After Hodaka there was the paint shop but that is only a memory past. I need to sell the body tools, the paint guns although used little they should go. That leaves the gallon of Hodaka red as good as I could match. Back on track Powder coating offers return parts sand blasted painted and returned quickly for about $150.00 around here. You are producing beautiful paint jobs and it is good to see them match so well. The kids retrieved my keys and I will expose the color and make of my rattle can, when I make it over to the shop. I think my memory left on orbit but I hope it comes back around brighter and clearer. I will try and find help with picture taking and posting ------------ Clarence

Painting can be tricky. I`m going to the Automotive Paint supply and get paint mixed for the 3 Super Rats i`m putting together. The closest Paint for the Model 93s that I found is VHT SP119. Chevy Red Orange. The Air Cleaner is RED. Way darker than the Frame. Terry at HPI has a bunch of Air Cleaner Bodies for $89.00. I use Acrylic Enamel . Contact the local Paint Company: some will Color Match AND put the paint into spray cans and Pressurize them. Joe.

Clarence, I use maybe 1 1/2, but that includes a Super Rat air box or an Ace Headlight & the chain guard for one or the other. :ugeek: Victor

Paint, or.....

I would Vote for "Powder Coat"!

It is Thicker, and Harder than Paint, and will "Stick" better.

It comes in a LOT of colors too.
