Rat Pipe Woes

Post by viclioce »

It’s a 93A and pipe.

I got the cylinder back from Terry & Hodaka Dave. Finished the top end assembly on the bike! I went to put the pipe back on and I spent 1.5 hrs. trying to thread the pipe on to the exhaust manifold. I could not get the threads to grab. This pipe came off this cylinder. Only thing done was I had Hodaka Dave home the cylinder. Can’t for the life of me get it to thread back on.

Any suggestions? Thx! :ugeek: Victor

Dig out your highest power reading glasses or a magnifying glass and do a detailed inspection of the threads on/in both pieces. Get GOOD light for the inspection. Be thorough - you'll find the problem.

Do you have the pipe bolted to the frame? If you do unattach it and get the threads started first, thread it most of the way on then fasten the pipe to the frame and tighten it all up. If you find your problem following the excellent advice from Ed, you may need a miniature file set to dress up the threads. =------------------ Clarence

Clarence. I woke up this morning remembering the pipe fell off the shelf. I think the exhaust joint may have gotten bent out of round. I also can’t get the exhaust joint off the pipe. I’m going to try a spare exhaust joint in have and see if I can work the current one off the pipe with a punch. Wish me luck! :ugeek: Victor

I use to have trouble "Starting the Threading" on Camera Telephoto lenses to a Camera.
A guy showed me this Trick...

Carefully place the Exaust "Ring" as Square to the Exaust Port as you can, then turn it CCW until you Feel it "Click" (the mateing Thread Entry point), then carefully turn the Exaust Flange CW as it starts to go on, etc.

I used this for Bing Carb. tops as well, to keep them from Cross Threading.

Thanks Rick. I’ll give that a try. Getting it started has been the big issue. :ugeek: Victor

The problem is definitely with the exhaust joint. I can’t even get it loose from the pipe header. May have to cut the pipe and have an extension welded back onto the pipe header.

I used the exhaust pipe & header from the other Rat & it threaded right on! Is there any kind of die/tap I can use on the existing exhaust joint?

Did you burn this pipe out with the exhaust joint in place? I do not think anyone could thread it on if it were hooked to the pipe. I would soak it in clear vinegar for about 25 hours. Then soak it in oil, after that try and work it off by hand or tap on the nut side to side and back and forth, don't get into a big hurry. When you get it apart clean it, sand it buff it paint it . Don't loose the temper cause that's not a win win. --------------- Clarence
