Tank sealing/coating

Post by pungo »

Just back from Mid-Ohio Vintage Days. The event is getting larger and larger each year but not yet what it use to be a decade ago.

This year we went to several seminars, one of which was put on by the Vintage Japanese Motorcycle Club (VJMC). The seminar was about doing bike restorations from novice to expert.

There were some good tip, two most noted.

#1 Japanese case screws are JIS(Japanese Industrial Standard) and NOT USA Phillips, so get the correct tool for the job and stop destroying the screw heads.

Read about JIS here:

I just ordered the bits for my hand impact driver

#2 Avoid problems with tank coating products that fail over time, Caswel, Cream, POR etc.

They use Master Series Silver Primer. Its a anti-rust primer that is used on bridges, auto, inside gas tanks. They reported the test data showed that is is unaffected by acids, thinners all the way down the scale to gasoline. Has been used by them with success and no long term problems. Suppose to work on fiberglass, metal and plastic. So I ordered a quart and will test it on all of those materials. Curious if anyone here has used this product before. Its interesting that it is NOT marketed as a gas tank sealing product, but rather a paint primer. Although there is mention of it being used inside auto fuel tanks along with many other applications.

Info on this product is here

It seems to me that this screwdriver bears a close resemblance to the Reed & Price. :ugeek:

Often confused with the Phillips. Ironically the Phillips was designed to prevent aircraft sabotage before WWII. 8-)
