Ace 90 Fork Rebuild
OK, you old guy Ace experts: I'm working on a "Race90" build (using a few series 91 parts). Need to remove/replace part #908713 Inner tube oil seal. Shop manual blithley sez: "Place circular nut (the chrome piece) top side down on a wooden block & w/a thin punch & hammer " drive it out.
Not so easily done. I've removed pieces of said seal from a sacrificial circular nut (so I don't f**k up the good ones I need to use) after extended periods of whacking away, but the $#@%$*&? seal itself resists removal. Was to have been installed using a "suitably sized bushing driver" and Terry's site shows an ordinary appearing seal.
What am I missing here?

Bob it was so easy in the past when my hodaka shop was open. But I had to put new ones in my now rebuild and I had forgotten how. The first one I cut out with a dremal and I hate that. The second one I put on the block of wood or steel and used a beat on screwdriver just miss the steel lip and catch the seal, whack whack and it was out. ----------Clarence Call anytime 406-281 9326

Yes they can be a real challenge to remove! I have had success soaking in penetrating oil then heating it with a heat gun to the point of melting the rubber then using a large socket to knock it out. Use the largest socket that will pass through the nut.
I have also been to the point of breaking out the dremel. Once the rubber is out you can notch the remaining metal band (not cut through it). With several notches cut you can get a small screwdriver behind it and flex it out.

I couldn’t even get the fork nuts in 2 sets of 90 forks to loosen…. Victor

heres how i pressed the seals in maybe use something along these lines to press it out. the piece of plastic pipe i used fit nice and snug and moved freely in the nut

I just removed two ace 90 seals very rusted it took about 3 minutes for both to be removed, easy as pie no lube no heat. I used a 1 pound hammer, old screw driver on a 1 inch piece of steel, the seal is incased in rust. ------ Clarence

That doesn’t look like an Ace 90 fork nut. That’s an Ace 100 after going to the later forks. Victor

Kinda like a piston is a piston, is a piston is a piston. Inner tube circular nut, same seal, same effort, same process. Same forks I think, but did not check. ------- Clarence
