Rear spokes puzzler for Combat

Post by MichiganBrian »

I had 1 broken spoke. It’s an outside spoke with a 90 degree bend. A friend sent me combat spokes. They didn’t work. Terry sent me one and they were the same. The rusty spoke in pic is the one I need. Has anyone run into this?

It could be that over the years they’ve just grown them shorter. Shouldn’t make much of a visual difference as long as it still fits.

I may have an extra in my box. Tell me what length you need. I have different lengths. :ugeek: Victor

While I don't have a solution for your situation . . . it is clear that the two spokes in the photo are for different uses.

The old spoke has a slightly open bend AND a "long reach" at the head.

The newer spoke has a slightly closed bend and a "short reach" at the head.

One thing to keep in mind is that a given spoke removed from a half-century old wheel may not be the same as the spoke the factory installed at that location. (Not saying that is the situation here . . . but it would be good to review that possibility.)

. . . and, um, Hodaka spokes were stainless steel. Another point to ponder.

I can not run that short spoke thru the hub. It acts like the hub is too thick and it won’t make the bend.
What I did was try an inside spoke with a angled bend. Like roughly a 45 degree bend.
I was able to fish it thru hub and get nipple on. But there is no gap by hub like it supposed to. It lays on hub tight. I’m having a hard time explaining this so look at the pics that I’m sending. First one With blue tape is the one I put in, second picture is what it supposed to look like.
I’m wondering if I’d be OK running it that way.

Victor, I received the spoke. Unfortunately the diameter is different. My spokes are 3.10mm, the spoke you sent me is 3.45.
Thank you for trying to hook me up. I’m just gonna run what I got.
Thanks, Brian
