Question for a friend....

Can a Model 99 frame be swapped for a Model 03 frame? Will the motor & forks with the 03 tree fit onto the 99 frame without modification? Victor

Gotta think on that one a bit. But I do know that the steering stops are different between "normal" Toad forks and 03 toad forks, requiring some craftsmanship to address. I have 03 forks on a 94/95/96 frame - and had to create new fork stops.

Also keep in mind that that the 03 uses a longer swing arm and longer shocks. Swapping just the forks could leave you with an unbalanced bike. I incorporated fork stops into the lower triple clamp of the 03 forks. They will dent the tank without some method of restricting side to side travel.

OK. Shameless continues to have issues with that swing arm bolt being stuck in that 03 frame she has. If they can’t get it out, ( she took it to a shop now), is there anyone near Oregon who would have an extra 03 frame which they could part with? Victor

Clarence, it’s damaged. Some DPO Hammered on the threaded end. I send ther a used but functional replacement bolt, but she needs to get the old one out to replace it. The shop is going to try to drill it out. Bictor

Why take it out? ------- Clarence"....... my old neighbors had a older tractor that needed new tire tread and when they went to take the tire off it would not come off it was stuck on so they left all the bolts off and sprayed diesel oil on it quite often and continued to use the tractor after a relatively short period of time it worked its way lose and they were able to take the tire off and get it fixed. not a solution for every thing but its always in the back of my mind....albert

Because they buggered up the threads so badly you can’t put a nut on it! She’s restoring the bike. So it’s important to the owner. And she plans to ride it.

And you know that if she rode it the way it is, with no nut on it, it would eventually come loose, full out and cause a bad crash! Victor

Ok, this is off the top of my head, so I am probably missing something.

Why not CAREFULLY center punch and drill off the offending end of the swingarm bolt, down to the swingarm where it is even with the bushing. Use a bit the size of the bolt, taking care not to bugger the frame. Do the same with the other end of the bolt, but doesn't it have a zerk fitting, so it is already has a centered hole? Drill that off down to the swingarm bushing. Then remove the swingarm and work on it free of the frame (using a shop press comes to mind). There's no need to damage the frame to get the swingarm off, is there?

Well, I’m in NM and the bike is in Oregon.

Shameless has already taken the bike to her local shop. They are going to try something like what Stever is talking about.

She doesn’t have the tools, especially a drill press. I’ll keep you posted. Victor
