Kick start oil leak

I have a very small oil leak from the kick start seal in a Wombat case . Apart from splitting the case , removing the shaft and replacing the seal is there anything I can try to make it seal ?

The seal is inside. It’s a rubber O ring. Plus the shaft slips thru it. Opening it up is the only way I know to change one. It’s probably torn. And the kick shaft must be removed to access the groove into which it sets. Victor

You ask is there anything I can try? I could list a few but how much is it leaking, 1 drop per day, a teaspoon per hour? First there is little to no pressure in the transmission because it is vented, how about some automatic transmission stop leak, I don't know if it would work or if anyone has ever tried it. How about a seal slipped over the shaft, a kick shaft roller thrust washer and a spring with thrust washer, going against the spring cover? Then the option of buying 4 quarts of oil at a yard sale for $3.00? If it is going in the house or museum I would split the case and fix it. Just me ------- Clarence

. . . and here is another thought for a "short cut" to ATTEMPT to reduce or stop oil leaking at the kick shaft O-ring. Try some "EZ Turn" (aircraft fuel valve lubricant). If I were going to try it, I'd "squegee" some into the gap around the shaft with my finger. It is a sticky/thick "grease" which is not soluble in fuel and might work to handle the motion and the near zero pressure leak sealing need. Aaaaannnnd, it might not work.

Thanks guys, it’s about a drop an hour or longer. EZ turn isn’t something at the hardware shop . I’ll try blasting it with compressed air,maybe a bit of grit in the seal. I know it’s most likely an engine disassemble coming up.

For those of us that owned a 1936 Harley, we always had a catch pan or hubcap to catch the oil. Just letting the new world look back on yesterday a baggy and two strings to hold the baggy up, dry humor drought year. ---------Clarence

Thanks for the clarification, Clarence. My 1930 HD had the total loss oiling and required the hubcap catch pan. Any effort to stop the Hodaka kickshaft leak without opening the cases would be my first effort.

I agree with Clarence. Put a diaper (or baggy) under it and ignore it until time for an engine rebuild.
