Snap ring removal...

Post by viclioce »

How does one remove this older style snap ring on a 90 shifter shaft? No holes for the snap ring pliers to hold on to it?

I tried just prying it open but the pliers slip before I can raise it out of the groove.

Thx in advance! :ugeek: Victor

Spred it open and get an edge under it to raise it up on the splines or at least up out of the groove , once it’s started you should be able to slide it up the shaft.

Dan. I got it loose but it bent out of shape. I was able to use some channel lock pliers & bend it back into shape. If I have the newer style, I will likely use one of those in stead.

But those OEM snap rings on the 90 shift shaft aren’t even available any more.

I’ve spent 3.5 hours cleaning this Ace 90 shifter cover I bought from Bruce. The grease was as hard as plastic! :ugeek: Victor

Hi Victor. I'd think twice about reusing an old snap ring - especially one that has been sprung and reshaped. Unreliable. Happy New Year!

I found one today in a parts baggie! So everything is assembled now. I used a newer style snap ring. I don’t know yet if I’m going to strip the paint, re-paint the covers, or just leave it as is.

And, thanks to Clarence, I learned how to install the shifter ratchet assembly when there’s no grease zerk to remove! :ugeek: Victor
