INTRODUCTION

Post by Greenhorn »

Hi All,
I've made a number of posts over the past week or two, so I thought I ought to introduce myself. My name is Patrick and I'm from Southern California. I've ridden motorcycle off and on over the years, but have always had a great passion for them. I currently have a couple dirt bikes and a quad stored and a KLR 650 I ride around here and there.

As a kid I loved motorcycles and collected motorcycle magazines... and I have always held on to them. I think I have 4,000 maybe, hard to tell. The bulk of them are from the late 60's through the early 80's and a few later than that. Cycle, Cycle Guide, Cycle World, Dirt Bike, MXA, Popular Cycling...

There happens to be a 1967 Cycle World sitting here with full page Zundaap, Bridgestone, Bultaco and Yamaha ads on the first few pages. On page 10 is a half page Pabatco ad not for Hodaka but for Avon Fairings. It includes a picture of "Harry Taylor from Pabatco on a Honda 305". Obviously Pabatco must have been the Avon importer at that time ;) . 2 pages later there is a full page Hodaka ad showing an Ace 90 with the text "THERE'S ONLY ONE HODAKA" - "It's Designed a WINNER - uncluttered by afterthoughts" Later there are ads for BSA, Ducati, Jawa, Norton, Royal Enfield, Benelli... and how about a "Magnum Electra 500" - From US Marusho Corp, it looks very BMW like :o . I love old motorcycles and old motorcycle magazines.

Some years ago I bought an ACE 100 fixer upper, but got busy in the mean time. Well it's time has finally come and that's what brought me here to the forum. In addition to signing up for forum, I just discovered this is a club so I signed up and I'm now a club member also.

About my ACE 100. I have Frame Number A 18417 and Engine Number 921001-01. I think someone turned a mild manner little Ace 100 into a racer of some sort. Some parts of the bike are salvageable and some will have to be replaced. I have identified the following Hop-Ups :D

Ridged Aluminum Front Rim
Cerani Fork (sadly pitted)
High Front Fender (front and back both plastic)
Bates Folding Footpegs
Knurled Gas Tank Cap
Air Filter Canister (not shown in picture)
Exhaust Pipe (mfg. unknown)
Rear Frame Cut and Welded (suspension improvement - reinforcement?)
Rear Shocks (mfg. unknown)
Aluminum Rear Sprocket

It has no headlight, but a tail light and license plate (not in picture)that used a total loss electrical system, a couple of D batteries stored in the tool can.

Here is a picture (not current) of it in it's basics.
I'm going through it mechanically and making a list of needed parts, nuts, bolts... Just about time for my first order. Once I think it's mechanically sound I'll consider cosmetics. I have had the tank cleaned and sealed (that turned out ok) and I do have the seat. The pan is decent, but the foam and cover need replacing.

So there you have it. Thanks for the assistance to this point, more questions posted and to follow. I go through my magazines here and there and I'll keep my eye out for any fun or useful Hodaka content.

Regards,
Patrick

The motor number you posted is actually a casting number, the motor ID number is on the right case half inboard of the clutch arm, should start with a letter.

Cool. Super Rat. I can't expand your picture but I see a 4-bolt manifold and maybe fluted cylinder head. That bike was born to race. I've rode some hare scrambles and enduros where only a tail light was required. That probably accounts for the electrical system. The rest are cool period hop-up and suspension upgrade parts. Groovie.
