Ace 100 vs Super Rat Differences
Ace 100 vs Super Rat Differences
Hi all new to the forum here. Just picked up an early hodaka ace 100 frame and am planning on doing a full build. I would like to build a super rat on this frame. So this leads me to my question of what are the main differences between the ace 100 and the super rat besides motor? Any challenges I should be aware of as far as starting this conversion build? Thanks in advance for any replies!

Re: Ace 100 vs Super Rat Differences
As far as the frames, they are exactly the same, other than that the Ace frame had a few added brackets for things like battery box, horn, brake light switch, etc. Those can easily be cut off if needed. The fenders were the same, other than hole position for things like taillight, etc. The Ace had a wider tank, but the mounting was exactly the same, just the Super Rat tank was narrower. I believe the seat had different foam, but the base was the same. The Super Rat had an expansion chamber instead of the Ace pipe and had a completely different air cleaner assembly. As you have already noted, the engines were different (but it was easy to convert an Ace engine into a Super Rat engine - new top end, carb, primary gears and revised ignition).
Re: Ace 100 vs Super Rat Differences
In addition to the motor differences mentioned, the Super Rat also has a small hole on the right side tool box mount for the exhaust spring, it has reinforced frame gussets below where the tool box would mount & it has a B designation on the beginning of the VIN on the VIN tag up front, while the Ace VINs all start with an A.
The Super Rat also has a different exhaust port mount for the exhaust pipe, which is slip mount instead of screw mount like on the Ace.
Motor differences besides the head, cylinder & piston include straight cut primary & pinion gears instead of the helical cut primary and pinion gear. This was done for the Ace to diminish the engine noise on the road.
The last thing I can think of is the 24mm carb and the 4 bolt intake manifold vs. the 2 bolt on the Ace with only a 20mm carb, along with the differences in the air filter boxes. So some people will always know the differences between a factory original Super Rat & an Ace, or a converted Ace to be a Super Rat. Victor.
