Made Kelly’s shock tool!
Made Kelly’s shock tool!
Today I cut and welded 2 pieces of angle metal to make Kelly’s shock tool! I ordered the battery tie down hooks from Amazon and they arrived!
I had 2 issues. One was cutting the steel with my hack saw! Arm got tired! Second was my welder acted up and wouldn’t feed wire for a while but I got it working!
Here it is! Victor

Good to see you springing into action on this one. Your arm will recover and you'll never have to make another one again.
How much do you charge for them?

Well. I think $5,000 each would be a good price! LMAO! Not going into the business of making them, but thanks for the encouragement! Victor

Re: Made Kelly’s shock tool!
im wondering can 03 wombat shocks be taken apart this way? the warning on the shock makes me a little leery
Re: Made Kelly’s shock tool!
The shocks can be disassembled as far as taking the spring retainer, the spring and the adjuster off. The shocks themselves can NOT be disassembled as they are welded shut and contain high pressure nitrogen gas. So, you can disassemble those parts, clean up the shock bodies, springs, etc. and repaint the parts. If the shafts are bad or the shocks don't work anymore, then they are just doorstops (or can be used for static display).
Re: Made Kelly’s shock tool!
The great thing about the tool is this. If you have a bucket of shocks, you can take them apart, remove defective pieces, and swap with good pieces from other shocks which may have something different wrong with them.
I’ve had several different pairs of shocks which had damaged caps. Removing a good cap from a shock with a bad bottom, makes one really good shock out of 2 less desirable shocks!
Dirty_Rat is correct from the point that you can’t take the dampener apart & rebuild it. At least not on the early shocks. The shocks on the 97 Super Combat & 98 Super Rat, as well as, I believe, the 175 and the 250’s can also have their dampeners rebuilt. Please correct me if I’m wrong on any of the larger bikes as I haven’t had a hands on with those shocks. Victor

Re: Made Kelly’s shock tool!
thanks for the advise i will give it a go. the two pairs I've got are pretty weathered looking ....albert
Re: Made Kelly’s shock tool!
Albert. You can pull them apart to make them much easier to clean! I use 0000 steel wool on the shock body & the cap.
For the smaller parts and the springs, I use a brass wire brush on my drill, followed by the steel wool. The wire brush removes the heavy stuff and then the steel wool brings out the shine! And, dis-assembly will allow you to re-paint the black portions of the shock before re-assembly! Victor

Re: Made Kelly’s shock tool!
So I was wondering, does the nitrogen gas leak out of the shock over time and inevitably destroy it? I would think that whatever seal is used would be rotten by now and just let everything out. It seems like a decent amount of people keep original shocks on their bikes, so I would assume a considerable amount of them are still working at least at the 50 yr mark. Not sure how though.
Re: Made Kelly’s shock tool!
easy peasey lots easer that the b+ shocks, thanks again Kelly
