Recessed vs non recessed 420 sprockets
Recessed vs non recessed 420 sprockets
It seems that both are available. Does it relate to the end of the countershaft or the spacer or whatever? What do I need to know?
It also seems that 32 tooth 4 hole rears are NLA as are 34 tooth 6 holes. Is it time to make some more or is there a workaround?

If you've already tried Hodaka Parts Inc, and Hodaka Parts Idaho, then...

Thanks, Gregg. It seems to me that making a dozen at a time would be more efficient, but with the CAD/CAM techniques now it's often just as easy to do custom jobs, once you have the basic parameters.
Still need - well want, actually - some take on the recessed counter sprocket thing. I've always used the recessed ones but wondered what the non are for. 90s?

M's 90, 92, 92B, 93 with the four bolt hub.

According to all my manuals the models 90,92,92A,93 had the four bolt dish sprocket and the 92B, 93A had the flat sprocket and cushion hub. ------------Clarence

What I'm referring to was the countershaft recessed sprockets. I'd already figured out the rear situation. I just don't know whether the recessed or non recessed countershaft sprockets are critical or just a matter of preference.

I thought the recessed sprockets are for the 428 chain and the non recessed are for 420 chain.

Just to verify, you are talking about a c/s sprocket where the mounting area is thinner than the tooth area of the sprocket, correct? If so, I would probably prefer the full width sprocket as it would give a larger contact point on the countershaft. The 420 sprockets are already pretty thin and on 40+ year old parts I would go for maximum contact. On the 428 sprockets I would run a recessed sprocket to give more room for the sprocket nut to thread on. Again, just my thoughts.

Looking at HodakaParts sprocket section it appears that the non recessed sprockets are for the models up to the 92B. The 92B+ and on use the recessed type. I'm still wondering whether they interchange or if something wouldn't work out right if I used the recessed ones on a 90. I guess if it fits, wear it, but would rather order parts that could be moved between older and newer models freely.

The recessed sprocket was for the 423 chain, used on the 92B+ that began with frame number A-67613. -------Clarence

From what info I could glean, 423 is just 420 with a larger diameter roller. 428 is 5/16" roller and the roller diameter is 8.5mm vs 7.75 on 420. 423 seems to have been transitional and that leaves 420 with flat counter sprockets or 428. A 420 chain should go on a 423 sprocket but the roller will be loose. That raises the question of 423 rear sprockets.
