Look what I found!!!
Look what I found!!!
Went to Albuquerque today and met Mark Lucero. He had these in his garage.
The first 2 pics are a bobbed Model 94 “C” frame with an Ace 100 motor which has been powder coated. The powder coating appears to have complete covered the motor number and it’s not readable. So I don’t know if it’s an Ace P motor or a Super Rat M motor. This also has a Rat Pipe on it and either some Akront or Takasago rims. No stickers so I’m not sure.
The second 2 pics are a 1972 Super Rat 93B. The motor is apparently stuck. It’s been sitting for 15 years because he was “Gonna restore it.” This will be my first Rat restore. Looks like it’s all there though. Even have the Rat pie plate air box.
It will be enough to keep me busy! I’ll do a restoration on the Super Rat for resale. On the powder coated motor, are there external clues which would indicate whether it’s a Super Ray, or Super Rat top end, vs. an Ace top end? Victor

Re: Look what I found!!!
I see a 4 bolt intake manifold and dimpled cylinder fins. Dimples in the cylinder fins make it a SR cylinder. The head is also correctly oversized.
It’s a 93B Super Rat evidenced by the larger frame gussets. The pipe was horribly cut off. If you have a damaged 92B+ pipe, remove the flame thrower end and re-weld it back onto the SR pipe to restore it to correct.

Re: Look what I found!!!
The frame in the top two pictures is either a Wombat, Combat Wombat or Dirt Squirt (96), you will have to check the frame number to determine which. The top end is a 93 Super Rat cylinder/head/pipe/carb.
The last two pictures is an Ace or 93 Super Rat frame, with modified top shock mounts (moved forward). Top end of this one also appears to be 93 Super Rat.

Re: Look what I found!!!
The two bottom photos:
The toolbox brace at "A" identifies this as the smaller Ace frame.
The Swingarm Frame gusset at "B" further identifies this as a 93B frame. Only the 93B had this reinforced frame. All Ace90, Ace100, 93 and 93A's had a smaller gusset in this area.
This reinforced frame is discussed in this youtube video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YiF2ffHMoHA

Re: Look what I found!!!
Roger. The Frame tag up front is B-72521. Looks original. Matches the number on the rear of the frame too. The range for the 1972 93b is 70,213-72,812. So my frame number falls into that range. So yup. 1972 100MX B.
Funny what’s been mentioned about the exhaust pipe. Alan just had the same experience with his. My question is this. Will the flame thrower end piece of a Wombat 94 pipe work as well? I have one of those. Looks the same to me. Can’t imagine they used different sizes for the different pipes. As much as Hodaka reused things. Victor

Re: Look what I found!!!
Dirty_Rat. The silver frame in the top two pics is a Wombat 94 “C” frame. What I don’t like is the rear loop of the frame was cut off. (See pic)
Does cutting this off the frame make the rear of the frame less rigid? Should I leave it like this, or weld the piece back in place?
My oldest grandson’s fiancé wants to ride this bike & I want to make sure it’s safe enough for her. Just seems like it could cause uneven flexing of the rear frame depending on which way the bike is leaning. Or am I just over-worrying about this?
The bottom 2 pics are indeed a 1972 100MX B. See the pics posted above to Roger. Victor

Re: Look what I found!!!
It’s been determined that both bikes are Super Rat powered. The 93B has the wrong tail piece on the pipe. I’ll likely address that in the rebuild. I was actually amazed that the bike was so complete! Even the pie plate air box! The aluminum sticker was still on the side of it too!
Believe it or not, the bike is already sold!!! I have until January to finish it! Victor

Re: Look what I found!!!
Victor, that looks like the later style toaster tank Super Rat air box which would be correct for that model. The pie plate air cleaners were on the earlier Super Rats.

Oh, OK! Thanks for letting me know! Not that familiar with Rats. This is my first one. Only seen pictures. Glad it’s correct! Bictor

Re: Look what I found!!!
Just for the sake of clarification, there are 2 bikes being discussed here.
The first one, for engine verification because the powder coating covering the engine number, is the one with the dimpled fins and the 4 bolt main. This motor is in the bobbed Wombat “C” frame with the Ceriani front end & alloy rims!
The second bike is the 1972 Super Rat 93B. I’ve already got the motor torn down! The pipe was rusted thru on the header from the bottom. It’s off to a friend to bend a new header and weld it on. I also have a Wombat flame thrower pipe from which I’ll remove the rear section and weld it on to the pipe to make it correct. Pic attached of the roached our header pipe!
Someone also ruined the exhaust manifold. They drilled a hole through the exhaust manifold and the header pipe and put a stove bolt through the exhaust manifold! Amazing what some people do. I had to use a drift and hammer to loosen the exhaust manifold & then hammer the manifold off the pipe.
More to come... ugeek: Victor

Re: Look what I found!!!
I don't mean to be a stickler, but the flame thrower end of a Wombat is not the same.
The flame thrower end from a Ace 100B+ would be the correct end to use. The Wombat pipe features a "flat" end where the Ace100B+ features an angled cut. Although a Wombat end will work, the B+ is the correct one and for a Super Rat it would be worth the expense and trouble to get the correct end or just let the next owner tackle it.
If it were me, I would find a destroyed B+ pipe and use both the header pipe and flame thrower end and you'll be good. (you'll need to cut the flange nut off and replace it with your slip fit end) Bruce Young or Greg Watkins would be the one's to talk to. Greg is closer to you and he's certain to have what you need.
Again, my $0.02

Re: Look what I found!!!
Victor,
I have a good 100B pipe that someone has already put a slip joint on the header. This pipe has just been hanging around in my parts pile for a while so I would be willing to part with it. Maybe some sort of at trade. I am currently working on an Ace 100 that I could use some parts for.

Roger! I got an Ace B+ pipe from Tether and finished the pipe! So now it’s correct!
We had a hard time lining it up. The pipe was cut funky before the stinger was welded on. Victor
