What is the prefered method to repair a striped case screw?
What is the prefered method to repair a striped case screw?
The title says it all. The front bottom case screw for the mag cover/shifter case is completely striped out. I am having trouble shifting into first. Part of the problem could be adjustment, but I think most of the problem that there is a missing screw in the shifter case.

With few exceptions, I have been able to get stripped Philips head screws out using an easy-out style removal tool. Otherwise, just drill off the head and remove the shaft of the screw with a vice grip once you've removed the cover. Always use an impact driver to remove those case screws or you'll strip them every time.

If it’s stripped out, heli coil is the way to go.

I'm not a good advisor on the best way to replace stripped threads in the cases - can't remember having to do that.
Buuuuuut . . . I have significant doubts that finishing up that repair will suddenly solve your shifting issue. If the shifter case is being held down wobble free by the remaining case screws (and they should be doing that just fine) - then shifter case mounting isn't the root of the shifter problem you are experiencing.

Fix the threads anyway and move on from there. Is the post still under the sprocket?

Hmmm...what is stripped, the end of the screw where the screw driver inserts or the hole where the screw threads into the crank case? From the title, it sounds as if the screw is the issue and not the mounting bung on the crank case.

. . . and I made a different assumption from the title. I guess I mentally threw out the possibility that we were being asked about a stripped screw (cuz no one repairs the screws????)

I dig, Captain. I know some folks refer to a bungled Philips head as "stripped".
Re: What is the prefered method to repair a striped case screw?
Larry. If it’s the threads in the hole in the case into which the screw tightens, take the case to a machine shop and have the hole aluma-welded, then drilled & re-tapped for the 6mm screw. I’ve had this done before and it’s easy for someone who does this kind of repair work.
But, if it costs more than $25-30 I would suggest just replacing the case. Left cases are easy to find and don’t have motor numbers on them. Victor

original post said missing screw, leads me to believe stripped case hole. Still lean toward heli-coil.
Re: What is the prefered method to repair a striped case screw?
It's the case hole that is striped out. The top hole and the post under the sprocket are fine. I didn't know heli coils were available in metric sizes. Where would I find one?

I got mine at Auto Zone. You want 6 mm x 1.00
Re: What is the prefered method to repair a striped case screw?
Thank you everyone. I'm going to try the heli coil.
