The difference: short 3 3/16”, long 4”

Early 90 were on top of the clutch case and as I remember they were gray. ------ Clarence

these are both oil stained white.

Weren't the earliest ones all metal?

Model 97 and 98s also used the longer dipstick. Both bikes had the older Ace style clutch cover with the top mounted dipstick so the straighter and longer kick start levers they used would tuck in closer.
