as long as ive been working on hodakas my then 8 when we started now 11 year old grandson has been helping me with all projects and some times he comes up with ideas that i would not ever think of . so im not going to reveal what he came up with last year , dont want guys showing up with a strait jacket and foam shoes , but i cant let it go . so i have to ask a question... if you were to get rid of the clutch and all that goes with it and then cut off all the the engine case and get rid of all the gears and every thing behind the crankcase just leave the magneto cover with the points and stuff in tact . so your leaving the crank, magneto, fly wheel and cover, in theory would the " engine" run ? would the weight of the clutch need replaced ? in the picture save the green part cut off the red. feel free to criticize. just food for thought ....albert

If you eliminate all the parts you mentioned, you’d have a chainsaw motor with no clutch. It will run but you will need to come up with a way to transfer power to the wheels, such as a belt system like a snowmobile or Rokon .

Did the Ace motors used to power Bonanza minibikes use the Hodaka transmission or did they have a jack shaft arrangement like all the lawn mower engine-powered minibikes?

The Ace motors for the Bonanza (and all other minibikes, minicycles, etc. that used Hodaka engines) all had the transmission. It was just like a spare engine for the Hodaka's.

well what were thinking of is building some tracks with a ski in front. was thinking of some kind of Centrifugal Clutch with belt drive, i dont know , my mind just sorta wanders around sometimes that happens when you hang out with a 11 year old , maybe i will just go watch more reruns of star trek and try and forget the whole thing.....albert

Wow Victor, I never stopped to summarize the Star Trek franchise in detail like that and I'm a fan. Who'd think that lode would be so rich and deep. Not bad for a seed show that lasted a few seasons. Gene Roddenberry was a visionary like few other.

ok truth be told i haven't watch a star trek episode or any thing else that has to do with it in a long time. i was using that analogy to suggest that i should do something less destructive. im not a big tv fan i believe tv is not your friend i watch maybe an hour or two a day most times less and mostly some goofy thing my wife watching. i read mostly, sorry to mislead ya . i would watch star trek thought they had good fun exploring the universe. gearyoliver your reply has made me forget that train of thought . if i wanted a chain saw i should just go get one, back to the drawing board thanks all ...albert

Well Matt, I’ve been an avid Trekkie since the beginning. I have ALL the movies on DVD & my kids gave me the TOS on DVD for Xmas a few years ago.

I recently watched the first season of Picard. I found it interesting. They floated characters from the past in and out, just to wet your whistle. New cast members too, just to carry things forward.

According to his appearance I accidentally caught on Tge View, Patrick Stewart asked Whoopi to come back as Guinan for the second season. So that will add/bring back an interesting relationship!

I know, I sound like I’m in it too deep! But I enjoy both the fantasy aspects as well as watching for all the things which have become reality because of these shows. Things like automatic self opening doors, my insulin needles twist for a measured dose like the hypo spray, there’s people out there working on teleportation, and so many others which have appeared over the years because of the vision & imagination of these shows and all the young people from our generation who were motivated to try something because they saw it on one or more versions of Star Trek!

thank you dale , some times when were on a roll with a project im not really sure whos in charge . yesterday was a nice day here so him and i checked out the B+ and started it ,hasnt run since late october half a kick it started got to love it,and i turned him loose with it , then i got the 94 wombat going and turned him loose with that one then got the burned up basket case B+ going and away he went. so im trying to do my part keeping him interested in being a motor head. .... ahh victor im out of the loop whats TOS? Albert. When it come to Star Trek, TOS= The Original Series; TNG=The Next Generation; DS9 was the designation of the space station that series was about; TAS= The Animated Series! There was an animated series (Not cartoons) made with the original actors and the same writers after The Original Series went off the air! Victor

I'm no help with the Star Trek discussion, but I did do some work on a dirt bike motor cut down as described at the top of the post. While I was working at a Yamaha shop in the 80's a customer brought in a 250cc MX motor that he was using to power a chainsaw for lumberjack competitions. Scary thing. Glad he didn't have the bar and chain mounted when I was working on it. I don't remember what he was doing about lubing the crank bearing - replaced it with a sealed unit?

If memory serves, unlike a Hodaka I think that both crank seals on the MX250 were outside of the bearings, so they would get lubrication from the premix.
